September Meeting, Monday, September 15, 2008

This month’s meeting focused on magic that was black or white or with color as part of the magic or props.  Grant Golden performed a routine called “A Grave Mistake” where a large paper depicts a black and white illustration of a very expensive casket.  Expressing that it is just not affordable, the paper is folded inward to show the next most expensive model which is still not affordable. The paper is folded again showing another model which is also not affordable.  Finally, the paper is folded inward, showing the affordable choice to be, a garbage can.  Grant also performed a nice routine with a set of black Chinese Sticks where, when the yellow tissel is pulled, the tassle goes up and vice versa.  Carl Niebuhr showed an entertaining routine with a crystal silk cylinder where several colored silks were placed into a clear tube and covered producing a tube full of colorful wrapped bubble gum.  Greg Joyce mentioned the powerful black hole effect in outer space where objects that get too close get sucked in never to be seen again.  He then showed the more powerful “black rectangle,” which can catch rays of light.  Greg showed a large black rectangle silk and then produced from it “the rays of light” (a long rainbow colored streamer).  Then Greg asked for a volunteer to catch the rays while holding up the black silk between his hands.  He then rendered the rainbow streamer invisible and threw it in back into the black silk where it was “caught” by the volunteer.

Club Picnic – Sunday, September 7, 2008, Independence Park, Marquette Heights 5:30 p.m.

The club and family members joined together for a potluck dinner including fried chicken, beverages, beans, brownies, pies and other good stuff.  Afterwards, a video of the club show in April was shown on a makeshift screen (a white sheet) using a projector.  Featured was Gordon Snow’s routine with a young man from the audience aiming a magical wand at the deck of jumbo cards on the table trying to make the chosen card jump out.  In the Sidekick routine, the lad misses the deck only to shoot a rose out of a vase on the table, causes the table skirting to come undone, and causes the flap of the table to come down revealing the jumbo card with the incorrect card.  With the wave of the wand, Gordon fixes everything and the card changes to the correct one.

Dealer Show by Harry Allen of Daytona Magic (www.daytonamagic.com) - Tuesday, September 23, 7 p.m., Pekin Holiday Inn Express

Harry brought in a lot of magic spread out over several tables and performed and demo’d quite a bit.  It was a fun evening of magic.  Please visit the Web site as it is one of the best organized magic shop sites in the country.
