This Month:

June Meeting – 3rd Monday, June 16 at Bergner’s in Sheridan Village 7:00 p.m.  “Close-up Magic” Magic that can be carried around in the pockets or performed with or without a table including cards, coins, and smaller objects.

Last Month:

May Meeting, Monday, May 19, 2008

This month’s meeting focused on non-magical fields that entertain audiences in a magical way such as ventriloquism.  Mike Tate performed several routines with vent figures including a boy figure which wore various hats such as a fireman’s hat with a few humorous lines for each hat relating to each profession.  He also brought the larger figure Dr. Odd (with a large head) dressed in medical attire and with accompanying medical jokes relating to questions asked by people such as the lady who wanted advice on a bone broken in two places.  Dr. Odd replied that she should stay out of those places.  Allan Adcock brought a black felt easel and showed a few versions of rag pictures, an older art form where various pieces of colored felt are added to produce a natural scene such as the woods and sky with accompanying birds and a horse.

Ron London Lecture, Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Ron London presented some of his tried and true effects such as a large kitchen match which splits into two and a card effect where ten or so cards are counted and upon recounting, there is a missing card each time.  There was also a book test with two one-digit numbers being chosen forming a two-digit page number.  The first word on the chosen page was correctly revealed.  There was an effect with a spiral notebook where it appeared that a drawing of a closed door magically changed to show an open door.  In another effect, a bottle cap placed in one of two match boxes magically jumped to the other box.

In the second half, Ron demonstrated some dealer items including a mentalism effect where three colored balls (yellow, red, and white) are placed into various pockets by a spectator (Brad Borland).  Ron correctly revealed as to which pocket they were placed.  He also demonstrated a bill to matchbox effect, an effect where a red silk travels to one of his pockets and then transforms into a cane, and a prediction effect where a chosen color (green) from a few colored cards is correctly revealed.  In Checker X, one of four colors is chosen from red, green, yellow and blue and when the corresponding large wooden checkers are threaded onto a rope and tied behind a volunteer's back, the three unchosen colors are removed, leaving the chosen color remaining (red).  He also tied a square knot onto a rope and removed it, performed rope through the body, sliding a long piece of rope (entering the front and leaving the back), from the middle and out his left side, did a color changing knot effect where a knot changes from white to red and then to blue, and an effect where two knots untied from a rope appeared back again.  Ron reprised his performance of the effect where a volunteer holds the ends of a wand between his two outstretched hands balancing a coffee cup and a washer tied onto a long string.  When the cup is released it drops but falls short of the ground as the string and washer wrap around the wand.  Assisting with the effect and several other effects was young guest Michael Stoens from Lostant.  Ron also performed an effect where several gold coins placed into a stand vanished from the stand and appeared inside of a clear glass.  He concluded with a very nice effect using a glass goblet and a deck of cards placed into it.  As a transparent silk was whisked over the goblet, the face card changed to one the aces each time as all four aces were produced.
