Last Month:

Meeting, Monday, June 18 – “Red, White, and Blue”

This month’s meeting featured effects that were “red, white and blue” or patriotic. A possible October club magic show was discussed as well as ideas on how to promote magic in the community through performance and teaching. Adam Shake and Nicole Shake led off with the performance of Mis-Made Flag with the finale of the production of a large American flag. Gordon Snow performed an effect with a red silk, a white silk, and a blue silk, where arising from the silks appeared a white dove. Greg Joyce showed his routine for Jumping Ponytail Holders using a red, a white, and a blue cloth ponytail holder in place of the traditional rubber bands. The routine included Jumping, Impossible Locked, Split, and Chameleon (double jumping) with accompanying patter. Greg also performed the Hummer Cup Trick, a mentalism effect with three red cups and a blue plastic golf ball, which was secretly placed under one of the cups by guest, Gambitt, 16, from Pekin. While Greg was turned away from view, Gambitt called out the numbers of two cups at a time and switched their positions on the table. Sets of two cup numbers were called out and cups switched until Gambitt stopped. After several switches, Greg correctly revealed both times which cup had the chosen blue ball under it. Each cup was marked with a playing card in front of it (A, 2, 3) and the effect can be done with the performer out of the room or by phone. Brad Borland performed an excellent effect called Patriotic Napkins where three cups, red, white, and blue, were loaded in succession left to right with three red, white, and blue napkin balls in the corresponding cups. Upon rolling the napkin balls from each of the cups, it was revealed that each cup had a red, a white, and a blue ball. The effect was visually appealing and drew a round of applause. Doc Lowery performed a vent routine with Adam and Nicole where each held a colorful cardboard cutout of a pair of lips in front of them and pulled a piece which moved the lower lip while Doc assisted them in singing “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” This is apparently a newer inexpensive vent item that plays big. Mike Tate also did a vent routine where the produced dove began to talk from inside the cage. When a white sheet was placed over the cage, it seemed that a cat was inside.
