March Meeting – 3^rd Monday, June 18, 7:00 P.M.

NEW LOCATION!!! Leonardo’s at The Shoppes at Grand Prairie in Peoria, 5025 W. American Prairie Rd. (behind The Shoppes) (Leonardo’s on War Memorial closed Sunday, May 6.) We have a very nice large room, so come on out and enjoy some magic!

Red, White and Blue Magic (any effect that includes these colors, including patriotic magic and even card color changes and related packet or whole deck effects)

Last Month:

Meeting, Monday, May 21 – Showmanship and Patter

This month’s meeting, the first in our new location, featured effects that are enhanced greatly by effective patter and showmanship. Adam Shake led off with some business including a vote on accepting the SAM’s proposed name change of its positions to “Worldwide” instead of “National” to reflect that SAM is now a worldwide organization. Adam introduced the evening’s topic and performed the Tree of Diamonds three-card monte effect and told the puzzling story of how three men together paid thirty dollars for an item but were overcharged five dollars and had to be refunded evenly. Through a series of exchanges with the seller, all three believed that they were fairly repaid when in fact they were not. Adam says that most people are unable to trace the faulty math involved, but, of course, Greg Joyce had to follow step by step to prove where the math did not add up. Gordon Snow performed an Invisible Deck routine. Greg Joyce discussed showmanship, particularly in relation to the selection of effects in a show, such as the opening and closing effects and the overall presentation. Greg performed Strat-o-Spheres with the patter of a visit to Bicycle Safety Town where something strange was playing havoc with the stoplights on the bicycle course, causing the order of the lights to change and although the offending red light disintegrated, a mechanic, quite a joker, had arrived to replace it with a new red light. Later on, Greg also demonstrated his routines for magic paddles and hot rods and The Vanishing Deck, where a selected card is revealed, and instead of passing through the card box back into the deck, the whole deck disappears. Newcomer Steve performed a funny routine where a rope is wrapped around someone’s neck, with bits of humor included, and then the rope is pulled and passes right through the person’s neck. Nicole Shake talked about a routine she and Adam use for the Mis- Made Flag change bag and silk effect and the great audience reaction that kids have when the magician makes a mistake. Nicole also performed a routine with The Vanishing deck. Byron Niebuhr performed a routine with the Svengali deck where the chosen card is revealed to be every card in the deck. Newcomer Brad Borland performed a card effect where a selected card was replaced in the deck. After showing that several cards were not the chosen card, two of those random cards were placed into Greg Joyce’s hand, where one of the cards was revealed to be the selected card and the other was there as misdirection or in the case of one of Brad’s college friends, to give out his contact information, written on the back of the card. Brad is a recent graduate of the University of Illinois.
