About The Lecture

Michael Baker's current lecture consists of items for both Close-up and Parlor/Stage. Some of the effects were featured in his two One-man Parades in the Linking Ring. Michael won the Howard Bamman Best of Year Award for these Parades in 2003.

There are items with cards, coins, watches, rope, cups and balls, fingers, and a few other things. Most all are within the range of the average magician. There will be some merchandise and lecture notes offered for sale after the lecture.

About Michael Baker

Originally from Illinois (Peoria area), Michael now resides in Birmingham, Alabama. He has been a full-time professional magician for over 20 years. His creative writings on magic have been published many times. Michael also manufactures a line of limited run, high quality apparatus for magicians, including some of the finest woodwork to be found.

Last Month:

Joshua Jay - Lecture and Workshop, Sunday, November 6, 2005:

About ten magicians attended the workshop from 2-5 p.m.  Featured were card effects such as a four ace revelation from four packets and a seven card effect that could be performed by phone, an origami-style bill fold effect where a folded bill pushed inside another folded bill becomes larger twice and then becomes full sized (similar to Card Warp), and bill effect where two bills switch places and then one turns into a foreign bill.

Around twenty folks attended the evening lecture where Joshua demonstrated his Chinese Coins from Ribbon effect, Overlap card gimmick, packet card effects and Card from Remote Control effect.

Magic Auction, Monday, November 21, 2005:

The club held its annual auction at Leonardo’s Pizza.  Sellers included John Brownback from Springfield (Videos, DVDs, etc.), Tony Mitchell (Mutilated Parasol, Suitcase Levitation), Greg McNeil (Linking Rings), Steve Curtis and Grant Golden (small stage magic items, silks, etc.).  About 25 bidders were in attendance including some of Paul Buob’s youth magic students from the Chillicothe Library program.

Coming Up:

Eric Evans Lecture:

Sunday, January 8, 2006

Holiday Inn Express, Pekin, IL, 3615 Kelly Ave.  Click here for map

Time: 7:00 p.m.

$15

About the lecture:

His lecture is a unique combination of theory and sleight of hand from a performer who has worked in all kinds of environments.  He takes the best of street performing and shows you how to bring the magic indoors for close-up and stand-up situations. Eric Evans is an award-winning magician who was twice nominated for Parlor Magician of the Year at the Magic Castle. He has toured the world performing street magic, while also performing in a wide variety of venues from restaurants to theaters including Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California

But most notably, Eric is a co-author of the highly acclaimed book The Secret Art of Magic, http://www.secretartofmagic.com. The Secret Art of Magic is the ground-breaking book that uses war strategy as a paradigm for teaching street magic, audience management, and dispersion with a new and expanded approach to misdirection.

While The Secret Art of Magic was a book of pure theory with no effects, Eric's new lecture illustrates these strategies using stand-up routines that have been refined in the fires of the street. However, just as the street magic section has been praised by Michael Close, Jamy Ian Swiss, Roger Klause and many others for its applicability to "indoor" venues, so too is the material in Eric's new lecture perfect for anyone desiring solid, bullet-proof effects. Indeed, Eric himself has used them in parlor and stage shows. Predominantly stand-up, the tricks cover a wide range of skill level from easy to challenging.

Some of the highlights include Eric's work on the Miser's Dream sequence, including several soon-to-be-classic bits with a young volunteer that always bring huge laughs. His single-coin routine that is a mainstay of his award-winning stage act, including an original addition that is sure to fool, and more certainly to please, even the most reserved spectator. You'll be considering where you can add it to your existing coin work immediately. Coins, coins, and more coins! A virtually unending number of jumbo coins from the hand is one effect that Eric calls Mephisto's Mits, plus the production of a countless stream of dollar sized coins you'll have to see to believe. Eric's version of the Kangaroo Card (a chosen card "hops" from out of a hat) has fooled even the most knowledgeable card men. His version of Johnny Brown's "Balls from Mouth" creates the illusion of far more balls than are used, including Eric's surprising climax. The closer to his street show! He shows the trick he uses to get the money! It uses a borrowed 20 dollar bill in a combination of classic effects including a hilarious destruction of the bill that is completely safe and legal. The simplified handling and the psychology that makes it work is easily worth the price of the lecture itself.
