  Next Meeting:

Friday, April 2,  2004 - 7:00 p.m.-9:00 P.M.  <

West Bluff Christian Church, 2018 W. Kellogg, West Peoria, IL

Theme:  Homemade Magic.  Use something found at craft stores or dollar stores to make

your own magic effect.  Show your creation at the meeting.  You may also bring items and

ask for advice on how to turn them into magical effects.  Make a trip to the store or look

through your odds and ends to find a new magic prop.

Last Month:

Meeting on Friday, March 5, 2004.  Theme: Lucky Magic/Puzzles

Jerry Tupper performed an elaborate effect whereby three cards were chosen from three separate piles, resulting in

a three digit number.  Using a hand-written letter, the photo of a riverboat and a scarf, Jerry told the story of a riverboat

trip from long ago.  As a finale, it was revealed in the letter and by the number of the room key, that the three cards

chosen matched the room number exactly.  Grant Golden performed an interesting Ring on Chain puzzle effect.  The

spectator is unable to get the metal ring to catch onto the chain, but the magician knows how.  Rich Rau brought an

effect whereby several colored dice and a small metal box with a lid are used.  The spectator chooses one of the dice

and places it into the box, which allows only one face-up side to show, and places on the lid.  The magician then reveals

both the color of the die and the number showing on the face-up side.  Paul Buob showed a Three Card Monte effect

whereby the different-colored card in the middle of three cards vanishes.  Greg Joyce demonstrated Water Cup Monte

whereby one of three cups is filled with water, the cups are mixed up and the audience cannot locate the water cup.  He

told the story of how carnival barkers would swindle fair-goers out of their money with Three Card Monte and how to

make a homemade gaffed version.  Greg did the Dots Impossible effect whereby one of a small group of face-up Jokers

was chosen, only to be shown that its back was a different color than all the others.  Greg also performed an effect with

three small brown ring boxes.  While his back was turned, he asked Gordon Snow to place a dime into one of the three

boxes and then to switch the positions of two boxes at a time, calling out their positions (1, 2 and 3).  When Greg turned

back around, he immediately revealed which box contained the dime.  This is a version of The Hummer Cup Trick and it

gets more mileage than the real Hummer!

Roundtable on Monday, March 15, 2004

Number 2 in our series of monthly Roundtables at Hardee's in downtown East Peoria on the 15th of each month from

7-9 p.m.  In attendance were Rich Rau, Adam and Nicole, Tony Mitchell, Greg Joyce, Gordon Snow, Todd Smith and Jon

Gallagher and his daughter.  Greg Joyce brought a Leprechaun puzzle containing three pieces (two top pieces and one

bottom piece).  By rearranging the top two pieces, one of the 15 leprechauns magically vanishes--and 14 are left!  Rich,

Nicole and Greg (mostly) spent some time analyzing the situation to try to figure it out.  Adam showed Lethal Tender (a

half dollar and a Chinese coin switch places from in and on top of a spectators hand).  Jon Gallagher brought out a

brown date book, had a card selected and asked Nicole to select a month and a day.  In the date book, on the date

selected, was written the selected card.  Gordon Snow shared a story, we discussed magic and the evening went fast.
