Fielding West Lecture, Monday, March 10, 2008

The lecture was well-attended with about 40 present.  A special thanks to those who traveled from Springfield, Champaign, Bloomington and Princeton to be with us this evening.  Fielding told stories of his magical pursuits and performed his famous comedy routines including Bob the Bird, Coke Bottle to Champagne Glass (filled with water from a brown paper bag), Coin Across (with a jumbo coin vanishing and traveling from one hand down the opposite sleeve to the opposite hand), and a gag with a can of hair spray cover with a paint can top.  In Bob the Bird, Fielding produces a dove from a silk, “stretches the neck of the dove and pulls its head off” only to have the dove vanish and appear unharmed in his side jacket pocket.  Fielding also demonstrated a very clever effect where a balloon self-inflates from inside of a bag of deflated colored balloons.  It was a very enjoyable evening of comedy magic and good to see all of our friends in magic from the area.

Meeting, Monday, March 17, 2008

This month’s meeting focused on magic accompanying music provided by Kathy Martin, an instrumental keyboard version of “Knights in White Satin” by The Moody Blues.  Performing were Doc Lowery with a silent routine to the music with his vent figure Awsome the opossum (a light gray, dark gray and white figure) involving facial expressions and movement.  Greg McNeil performed a version of the Professor’s Nightmare (three ropes of different lengths become equal).  Kyle Bassett (“Gambit”), 17, performed Snow Storm in China fanning the air with a white Chinese fan to produce a snow storm of black paper throughout the front of the room.  Also, there was discussion about using music in magical performances as well as the value of instrumental music (over music with lyrics).

Rick Maue and David London Lecture, Thursday, March 20, 2008

The double lecture focused on mentalism by both performers who had different approaches and backgrounds in mentalism and bizarre magic.  At the beginning of the evening, David London performed a brief lecture including some of his ideas on the psychology of mentalism and demonstrated a cube box, in which the sides collapse when the box is opened.  After opening the box and showing it empty, the sides are closed, and then opened, showing a shot glass appearing from the empty box.  Rick Maue performed some of his signature mentalism routines including one with four audience members and four different colored paper balls.  Each person selected one of the balls and concealed it in their hands.  Rick asked the person with the red paper ball to stand up and brought out a cloth bag.  Inside was a message that the indicated the position in the row of the person with the red ball.  Rick also had an audience member select a card from a group of several cards, hold it up, and memorize it.  After the card was replaced, and the cards shuffled, he went through the cards and determined which one was selected.  He performed an effect with four people and four foil wrapped poker chips, some blue and some red.  Each person selected one of the wrapped foil chips and was given a laminated sign to hold up.  Each sign correctly predicted which color chip each person chose and other signs placed on the floor in front of each person correctly predicted the order in which the colors were selected.  There was also an interesting effect with a dry erase board where several audience members verbally selected two digit numbers that were written onto the board.  Presented with the board face down, a few audience members erased some of the numbers.  Upon showing the board again, a few numbers were remaining and a prediction was shown matching the remaining numbers.  There were about 20 in attendance for this lecture.
