Letter 33 -- Understanding 11:45 p.m.–Tuesday, August 28, 1977 Blessings to One and All, Understanding is the creator of Wisdom and true Love. That Love which is valid and has its roots steeped in the Heart is a child of understanding. For how can we truly love if we do not have understanding? Think not that you can love others in the way of which We speak by pronouncing that “We are all children of God therefore we should love one another.” It’s not that easy, Our friends. We know and We ask your patience in finding the true Path to loving and serving others. Understanding surpasses the belief that we are all children of God; for that can fool you, as many do not live the way of a child of God. True understanding is based on the knowledge of occult law. True love is based on that knowledge plus the most important factor-an open and willing Heart. The earnest disciple spends his life combining the two. Thence he moves into Wisdom. One is not truly complete without the other. However, We first seek in an aspirant an open and loving Heart for it is of supreme importance and must be the endeavored goal of all who wish to reach the portals of Initiation. There comes a time in the life of all disciples when he or she is ready to receive that knowledge, but sad to say many step off the Path by thinking that occult law as being evil, anti-Christ, etc. and must wait till another time. And worse yet there are those who have books for heads believing that the life of the Loving Heart is for the “sentimental fool.” Little do they know that Love is not connected with sentimentality. But they view it as so because they may see someone shed tears because they’ve been deeply moved by the Spirit, at which time they pride themselves in their strength of not being moved by such “emotionalism.” If only they knew how their souls shed tears because their Hearts are made of steel, they would flood the earth with their own. So you see, Our friends, it is far better that the pursuit of a loving Heart precedes the acquisition of the knowledge of occult laws. For the danger of the reverse is pure and simple smugness, conceit and complacency of position. And for the most part, an earthquake is needed to move one into Love-that is how difficult it is once the aspirant is in that fixed state of mind. It is important that We are not misunderstood here. Acquiring occult knowledge is admirable, and a most positive way to spend one’s time as it leads to the opening of others’ eyes to that which is Truth, and the reward is great for the truly earnest student. But if done without the same amount of energy–nay, more energy directed to the expansion of the Heart, it is worthless! We indeed cannot state it anymore clearly than as did Paul of Tarsus when he wrote: “If I have all the eloquence of men or of angels, but speak without love, I am simply a gong booming or a cymbal clashing. If I have the gift of prophecy, understanding all the mysteries there are, and knowing everything, and if I have faith in all its fullness, to move mountains, but without love, then I am nothing at all. If I give away all that I possess, piece by piece, and if I even let them take my body to burn it, but am without love, it will do me no good whatever. Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offense, and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes. Love does not come to an end......” (I Cor., Chapter 13, Jerusalem Bible) And
the Buddha when He taught and schooled His followers in the absolute
necessity of gentleness, receptiveness to others and an avid search for
the alleviation of the pain of mankind. We could go on and on with the
teachings of the earth’s great spiritual leaders to help you to
understand what We have just said. For what We have said IS an
occult law. And the understanding and practice of that law moves the
disciple into the greater depths of esoteric Wisdom. Listen well, until
this happens the aspirant is not a truly accepted disciple and he will
continue only to learn that which is written in books with very little
true understanding. Think on this; its importance cannot be over
emphasized. |
