Letter 22 -- Holiness Tuesday 12/21/76–7:15 p.m. To Our Dear Blessing Spirits, Holiness is a word that has given many theologians and the like a challenge to define. It is so closely linked with the meaning of humility that one would think they bear the same virtue. However there is a difference which we shall now discuss. Holiness first of all must not be mistaken for piety. Piety is a word that is mainly used to portray those who are the “religious”; those who live in caves, hermitages, ashrams, monasteries, convents, etc., i.e., those who do not live in the world. It is given to people who choose not to think worldly thoughts, but keep their hearts and minds purposefully and continually on God and His world. This is a path for their particular lifetime in which they have chosen to develop the interior more fully than the exterior life. Those whose destiny it is to live and work in the everyday world are a different matter, are they not? Are they any less beautiful or less loved by God? One should think not–as their lot in life is often filled with opportunities for growth that surpass the monk. It is not necessary to explain this as anyone who lives in the world, especially today, knows. He who lives and moves among men, women and children in his daily existence and carries with him the Heart and mind of God is holy. He who lifts his head from the mire that covers and weighs him down and looks to heaven crying for salvation from his hell is holy. He who then stands alert once again believing in the answer to come–is holy. He who keeps the ways of God in Blessing and serving others is holy. Holiness is a term for those who maintain a steadfastness of spirit, a vigil constant, for the call of the Master–Who will never fail. For We see many who are in the depths of despair and for all to see they are a “fallen away” people. But there glows still within them the flame of God and His universe–flickering but burning for its keepers have not allowed it to dwindle–these are a holy people. For you see We do not demand much of you, for life will send you this way and that as centuries pass, and emotions will rise and fall–for remember We’ve been there and We’ve not forgotten. Holiness is in he who tries–and holy is the man who lights the candle that carries him from life to life with the same everlasting flame. |
