1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: For those not familiar with the indigenous warrior tribe known as YAOTL MICTLAN give us a brief band bio...

YAOTLTlatecatl and myself (Yaotl) started the band in 99, but we did not get serious until 2002. We play "pre-hispanic" (era before the colonization of our lands) metal ,we sing in Spanish, and we add Indigenous instruments in our music.
Our lyrics all have to do with our true Mexica, Mayan ways, before the false christ and colonizers came and destroyed our world.

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Introduce the warriors currently under service of YAOTL MICTLAN(band members)
YAOTL: current line up is:
Tlatecatl-Vocals, Guitars
Xolotl- Guitars
Ak Ben- Bass
Yaotl - Drums
Martin & Juan- Indigenous instruments

3.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How long has the current line up been together?
YAOTL: Xolotl joined our tribe about 6 months ago, Ak ben about a couple of years.

4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Why was the name YAOTL MICTLAN chosen... (translate name) were there other names that could have been used?

YAOTL: Warrior(s) from the land of the dead(name translation) was chosen because the colonization killed the world as we knew it, so we feel we are in the land of the dead, but we feel that we are a few that are fighting towards the decolonization and bringing back our true culture.
5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What has YAOTL MICTLAN released so far (demos, Eps, Cds)... and how has the metal underground reacted to releases?

YAOTL: " A Batalla Vamos" demo came out in 2001, and our self titled debut full length will be released spring of 2006.
The underground has reacted very positive to the demo and our live shows, so hopefully people react as good to our full length.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How would you describe your style of music... to someone who has not heard it yet?

YAOTL: Mexica and Mayan hymns of battle! Or as Tlatecatl would say GUERRILLA EMPLUMADA!

7.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Tell us about your upcoming Cd release... (give name, release date.. who would release it?)

YAOTL: The full lenght will come out in spring ( we don't have a release date yet) its going to be self titled and American Line Productions from Mexico City will release it in Mexico, Central and South America.
We are still looking for some one that could release it here in the States.

8. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What is song "Resistencia Itzae" about and what inspired its lyrics?

YAOTL: Resistencia Itzae is the name of the track, and what inspired me to put it on a song, was that the Itzae Mayans, after the colonization were still free, un-beaten so the Spaniards sent many troops to destroy them, but could not do so; " A Spaniard troop along with newly Christianized Itzaes were attending mass in a make shift church, they were planning to attack after their mass, but the Itzaes surprised them and slaughtered everyone, and in this attack the Christianized Itzaes quickly realized their faith and joined their brother in struggle and beheaded the Spanish captain and stuck his head a stick in front of the church, while they sacrificed the catholic priest and offered his heart to the gods" if they could still remember sacred rituals after being Christianized therefore we could also come back to our true roots and deny the false ways.

9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Whose idea was it to incorporate indigenous instruments into your music... and how hard was it to add instruments to music when it came to recording?

YAOTL: Myself and Tlatecatl said one day, " wouldn't it be great to start a band that included Indigenous instruments " and that was a lot easier said than done because since we currently reside in Salt Lake there is really no one that plays the instruments let alone playing flutes while we are blast-beating. We have "trained" many of our friends to help us out, but it really only works for a month and then they leave. The only person that is consistent is a very talented guy, his name is Martin and he plays with us on and off, but he did manage to record with us in the studio. Since he is a very busy family man and we had no chance of rehearsing with him before we went to the studio, he went in after everything was finished and he added his flutes to the songs. We have now recorded everything into a sampler and we have someone play it back on our live shows.

10.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Had christianity not been invented by weak humans... what would the world be like?

YAOTL: if it didn't exist... It would have been another stupid religion.

11.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what is the scene like where you live... any bands you recommend checking out... bands from Mexico that you feel should be introduced to the masses?

YAOTL: The scene here in Salt Lake is strong, with bands like Terra Noir, Ibex Throne, The Obliterate Plague, Incendiant, The Pagan Dead, holy desecration, irkingu and many more. One of my favorite bands from Mexico is Xibalba, The Chasm, El Santo and Sargantanas.
