BLIZZARD interview for Dark Recollections 'Zine

This interview was answered by Corvus Tenebrae, the vocals of Blizzard Winter
1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: When did BLIZZARD WINTER come to exist...

CT: Blizzard Winter was born in 2003, although before, both me and Lidagon had been into some projects together.

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Give a brief band bio...(talk about band members, who does what, plays what instruments, etc)

CT: Well, the founder of the band was Lidagon. After being in several projects, he decided to create his own band, playing the way he enjoys the most. In 2003, he decides to move to Ireland with his friend Velpecula and formed the band. Lidagon handled the lead guitars and Velpecula took the rhythm guitar. They started to compose some music, but it was only in 2004 when I entered the band to do vocals and drum programming. So this is the complete line-up:

Corvus Tenebrae (vocals & drums programmings)
Lidagon (lead guitar)
Velpecula (rhythm guitar)

In 2005 we recorded the first demo, "Imperium", with lyrics on Portuguese and dealing with epic/medieval subjects, and with a stronger sound than before.

3. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How did the different band members meet... what is hard finding the right musicians to create what you envisioned BLIZZARD WINTER to be?

CT: At least Lidagon is very demanding. He wants total dedication to the cause. At this moment we probably found the missing links to have a good line up. A drummer is almost confirmed and a bass player too. But let's wait a bit more before confirming those members. They must be, not only good & dedicated musicians, but also great people that go along with the rest of the band.

4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Have there been any line up changes in the band.. is this the orginal line up?

CT: Like I said, before Blizzard Winter took shape has a real band, there was only Lidagon and Velpecula. He used a friend or ours to do drums in a rehearsal in 2004. A track from that rehearsal is featured as a bonus track on the demo. Things didn't work out, so we decided to go along with the programmed drums.

5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Talk about your demo "Imperium"...

CT: The tracks on "Imperium" were originally to be released on a split with other two Portuguese bands: Vorago and Coldblooded, but due to long delays, we decided to release those tracks as a demo. The lyrics are in Portuguese and have a medieval/epic subject, but that's not the rule for Blizzard Winter. We did those lyrics specially for this release. It was meant for all the bands to have lyrics or songs related to those subjects. Anyway, we did a first edition on CDR, limited to 50 copies with pro artwork on DVD box. Meanwhile, there will be a tape re-edition limited to 200 copies. Keep your eyes open for more developments on that matter in our website.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Can we expect a new Cd/Lp from Blizzard Winter in the near future?

CT: The next step is to release our second demo, entitled "Gateways to Rebellion". The lyrics will have a different subject and will be in English. The sound is better and the songs are much more dynamic, with more speed variation. There is an advance track available on the "Metal Legions" compilation of Dungeons Records. It's a free compilation for magazines and it features only Portuguese metal bands. You can try to ask for a copy at [email protected]
About a CD or LP it's to soon to tell, but our plans are to go ahead with something bigger after this demo. Something like an album or a mini-CD professionally released.

7. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Is BLIZZARD WINTER a studio only band... any plans to play live?

CT: Blizzard Winter is a studio band because there aren't conditions to go on stage. Both Lidagon and Velpecula are living in Ireland and I'm still in Portugal. But we want to go on stage in the future. We surely want to see how our material works live!!

8. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What is the song "Os Anos Negros" about.. what inspired its lyrics and music?

CT: "Os Anos Negros" deals with madness and the horrors of War. I tried to capture that feeling creating some sort of fiction or story. It's about a warlord or tyrant that sees himself dethroned and alone wandering through a vast battle field amongst the dead. The main idea, like I said, is to create a feeling throughout the song. That's the most important.

9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Do you listen to other types of extreme metal like death, thrash, or other types of music?

CT: I am totally addicted to Industrial, Noise, Power Electronics or Dark Ambient. Besides Metal, or course. I might even say that my favourite music genre is probably harsh electronics. I have this Industrial Noise project called KULT. I also enjoy Thrash Metal and old school sounding Death Metal. I also enjoy some Doom/Drone, like Graves At Sea or Unearthly Trance.

10. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Are you familiar with Cold Meat Industries from Sweden (dark ambient, death industrial underground label) any favorite bands?

CT: Like I said, my favourite music genres are harsh electronics. I, of course, know Cold Meat Industries. My favourite bands from Cold Meat Industries are probably MZ412, Brighter Death Now, Institut, Ordo Equilibrio, Proiekt Hat, Folkstorm and Sutcliffe Jgend. There is this superb compilation from CMI called Esthetiks of Cruelty. I totally recommend it!

11. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What is the scene like where you live... any new and upcoming bands you recommend checking out?

CT: The Portuguese scene is getting quite strong now. Good bands showing up and a lot more labels and stuff. The best bands at this moment are: Pitch Black, Bleeding Display, Karnak Seti, Hordes of Yore, Under Fetid Corpses, VS777 and Goldenpyre. If you are looking for good Black Metal bands, than you got to the right place: Corpus Christii, Sirius (RIP), Black Plague, D.O.R., Storm Legion, Flagellum Dei and Onirik.

12. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Got any band merchandise available to the public? (list items, prices, and how to obtain it)

CT: At this moment we only have for sale a few copies of "Imperium" CDR. They cost 5 euros. To buy, please send an email to:[email protected] This way, we can check the availability and then tell you how to proceed.

13. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Comments, last words? Thanks for the interview

CT: Thank you for this interview and for supporting Blizzard Winter! Hope we'll meet again in the future! Remember to check our website at: www.blizzardwinter.cjb.net
