HARKONIN interview for Dark Recollections 'zine
Interview answered by Clayton Gore
1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: For those not familiar with HARKONIN give us a brief band bio...
Harkonin (est. 2002) began with the idea of bringing a different style of
Black Metal to their impoverished St. Louis, Missouri metal scene. Over
the next year, Harkonin self-financed and released one EP and one
full-length album to an ever-growing audience. Copies have been sold and
shipped world-wide, receiving warm reviews and feedback from the
community. Harkonin's early music was representative of their angry,
hungry, unpolished and aggressive style of "blackened thrash". During the
2003-2004 era, Harkonin remedied their lack of technical proficiency and
experience by undergoing extreme line-up changes, replacing both
guitarists with studio veteran Matt Coyle and adding ex-Eulogy skins
master Clayton Gore. The new line-up immediately began writing material
and in May of 2005 recorded their second full-length album entitled
Sermons Of Anguish, which clearly solidifies Harkonins unique style and
showcases how tight they have become as a unit. Already working on new
material, Harkonin are gigging strong in support of their new release,
backed by new-found fan support around the globe.
2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS:Introduce current band members... who does what... plays what
instruments.?
Matt Coyle Guitars
Tom Quach Bass
Jason Barron Vocals
Clayton Gore drums
3. DARK RECOLLECTIONS:How long has current line up been together... is this the original line
up?
Matt: About year and a half. Fuck no.
4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Who picked the name HARKONIN... is there some kind of meaning to the
name?
Matt: Original drummer Mike Evans chose the name, which he got from the
Dune series of novels/movies the Harkonnen were the evil tyrants. At
the time, Mike thought no one else had the name.
5. .DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What has HARKONIN released so far? (demos, Eps, Cds?)
Clayton: Harkonin s/t demo (2002), Seductress of the Unlight (2003 full
length), Live at the Pit (2004 live official bootleg), Sermons of
Anguish (2005 full length)
6. Tell us about your new Cd "Sermons of Anguish"...
Clayton: Its our latest self financed release. With new members in the band, you can hear an obvious difference
in the writing style. Weve brought more of an old-school thrash
influence to our black metal sound.
7. .DARK RECOLLECTIONS: When recording Cd... was the hardest, easiest part to record?
Matt: Drums or guitars. Drums because of the size of the kit, and doing
all "real" drums (no triggers). Guitars because I am recording myself, and
I have to do everything twice. Vocals are usually the easiest.
8. .DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Were all songs put together when you went to the studio... any changes
made on the spot?
Matt: Maybe a few vocal arrangements changed. The harmonies on "Destined
to Conquer" thought of on the spot.
9. What is the song "Heksenbrand" about (meaning of word) and what inspired
lyrics to song?
Matt: Witch's Fire. I think it's about the power of a hot bitch.
10. .DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Have you had any offers to play live in other states?
Clayton: Yes, we have played in Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and Indiana.
We were supposed to do a short North American tour with Enthroned this
spring, but that recently fell through.
11. .DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what are your thoughts on the following subjects:
a. the end of the world,
Matt: If it comes, it comes....and humans caused it. Not any deity.
(unless Chuck Norris decides to end the world......)
b. neo nazi bands that claim to be black metal
Matt: Nazi punks fuck off.
Tom: Being a Nazi is a trend now. That's what metal is not about. A
TREND!!!!!!
Clayton: I have nothing against writing honest songs about the things one
knows and is passionate about, and the subject of politics is typically a
very impassioned realm. If that is truly what a person believes, so be
it. But when others use an NSBM faade as a type of gimmick, I have a
problem with that.
c. the occult
Matt: Cool if used sparingly, but people that take it seriously are just
some D&D geeks. To quote Butters from South Park, "I'd rather be a whiny
little pussy than a faggy goth kid"
d. christianity?
Matt: Has done more harm than good.
Tom: Christi-what? What the fuck is that? Never heard of it.
12. .DARK RECOLLECTIONS: any merchandise available from the band? (list items and prices... how
to get stuff)
Matt & Tom: BUY SOME SHIT, WE"RE BROKE!!!
Clayton: We have shirts, stickers, CDs, and complete packs of
merchandise, which is all available from www.harkonin.com Individually,
shirts are $15, CDs are $12, and stickers are free with any order. (All
USD).
13. .DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Last words, comments? Thanks for the interview...
Matt: Gojira kicks ass. Next recording coming soon.......
Tom: United We Stand Eternal Ban, Together We Are Strong Eternal Ban. See
everyone in hell!!!!!!
Clayton: Thank you. And yes, our new as-yet untitled album will be
recorded in March, and when we put it out we will also be including a
completely remixed and remastered version of Sermons as bonus tracks,
which will mark the end of production on the original Sermons CD. Get em
while you can
