THESYRE interview for Dark Recollections 'zine

Interview answered by ERIC

1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: For those not familiar with THESYRE give us a brief band bio..
ERIC: Thesyre began as a solo project in 1995. Many demo recordings led to some tribute albums contributions (Burzum, Darkthrone, Beherit) before I turned the project into a trio. We recorded a tape demo in 2002 and we released our debut, self-titled album in 2003. We did a split CD with Corpus Christii in 2004 and released our second full-lenght in 2005 on CD and LP. Right after we also did a split 7" with Akitsa. Here we are now...

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Introduce current line up... who does what.. plays what instruments?

ERIC: our current line up consists of:
E. Syre - Bass/Vocals
K. - Guitars
Zvord - Drums

3. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Why was the name THESYRE chosen .. any other names that could have been used for the band?

ERIC: No other names were considered. I used 'Syre' since 1994 as a pseudonym in other projects and it was mandatory to use it as well for my own project/band.

4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What has THESYRE released over its years of existance?(demos, eps, Cd/Lps)

ERIC: We managed to cover all audio formats of release so far on various labels (see question 1). I really like the vinyl format although its obvious that CD is more convenient these days.

5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What has the response been like to stuff you have released...which has received the best response thus far?

ERIC: We surprisingly got a great response for everything we released so far. I say surprisingly because I wasn't expecting any positive feedback, honestly. This is not the kind of music which please everyone, especially if you consider what is popular these days. Anyway, we got a great response to our debut and I am glad to be the one responsible for its promotion. Our split with Corpus Christii also created a lot of reaction, which is great. It's sad that many people will not be able to hear our collaboration with Akitsa since its only on vinyl, but then again they have to do some homework if they want to hear it all, which is a good thing as well. Our latest album 'Duality' never received the promotion it deserved and we hope to counter-balance this with our third album.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Talk about your latest Cd "Duality"

> ERIC: It was recorded in the summer of 2004 and been delayed forever before being released on Digipak in late 2005 by Selbstmord Union. Blasphemous Underground released the LP version which is simply KILLER! Both formats feature a different cover song: Sodom's 'Outbreak of Evil' on the Digipak and Motorhead's '(Don't Need) Religion' on the LP. The production on this album surpasses our debut I think and the vinyl release makes it justice. The songwriting is also more consistent and our overall performance is better. So far it's my favorite release and probably the one representing us the best. Some people have been confusing this album with our previous one. If they open their eyes they will realise that this one is black with a white logo while the debut was white with a black logo!!!

7. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What was it like going back to the studio this time around compared to your first studio experience?

ERIC: We're quite fast in the studio. we always do everything within a week. There is no writing in the studio so we concentrate on the recordings exclusively. It's hard for us to meet to rehearse and its the same when it's time to record. We all worked separately so far with me supervising the whole process.

8. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Have you had any offers from record labels to re-release your debut album "thesyre"?

ERIC: Selbstmord Union was supposed to re-release it but obviously it never happened. We got some offers already but we're sorting everything out label-wise first. I want this album to get an LP release as well, it deserves it.

9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Is THESYRE a studio only band, or have you played live... when was the last time you played live... and who did ya share the stage with?

ERIC: So far there's been no concerts for us, deliberately. We're not really interested by the live setting for Thesyre. Maybe someday if the offer and conditions suits us fine but so far we prefered to avoid it. We got tired of playing live when we were playing in other bands. We're not relentless showmen who enjoy driving hours packed in a van to play to a handful of drunk people all hitting each other instead of concentrating on the band. The idea is not ruled out forever but you won't see it happen frequently, if it ever happens.

10. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: If you could pick bands to tour with from past and present who would you pick?

ERIC: Impaled Nazarene, first. We already talked about it a few times. They would be a band I'd be interested to tour with. Otherwise I'd like to play with either Sodom or Motorhead, two of my main influences and all time favorites. Playing with an industrial or a punk band could also be interesting.

11. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What is the song "quatre lys noirs" (translate title)about...what inspired its lyrics and title?

ERIC: It translates as 'Four Black Lylies'. The white lilly is the symbolic flower for Qubec. This song's lyrics were written in french because it's about our province's dream of sovereignty. There's always been a deep feeling and desire of independance among a part of the population but it never got concrete yet. This song is about that vision and the fact that it's not happening because people suffer from the herd mentality and are afraid of an independant future. I am not.

12. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any merchandise available from the band? (list items and prices... how to get stuff)

ERIC: Anything which is currently available is listed on:
www.ascentrecords.com
There will also be a way to order all our merchandising from our website soon: www.thesyre.com

13. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any last words, comments? thanks for the interview

ERIC: Thanks for the support! Expect a new full-lenghts album before 2007.
