ESTUARY interview for Dark Recollections 'zine

Interview answered by Ash.
1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: When did the death thrashing soul scarring entity known as ESTUARY come to existence?
ASH: We formed in late October of 2002

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Give us a brief band bio...

ASH: The band currently consists of myself, Ash Thomas(guitar, b.vocals), Zdenka Prado(lead vocals) Jesse Wilson(drums) (Our other guitarist Brad Howard just recently informed us that he would be leaving the band). We play total Thrash tinged Death Metal with 100% sincerity.
3. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How did the different band members come together to form ESTUARY?

ASH: Jesse, Brad & myself all came from a different band called Estuary of Calamity. It was completely different than ESTUARY even though both bands share similar names. We have been playing together since we were kids really. Zdenka is from the band Garden of Shadows from Maryland & before that she did vocals for a band called Forty Days Longing. I was in contact with her because I was doing session bass for Garden of Shadows back in 2002. When things started to slow down with GOS I asked her if she wanted to move out to Cincinnati & do vocals for ESTUARYwhich of course she ended up doing. Our former bassist Steve is an old friend who plays guitar for a Cincinnati based grind band called Morticite.

4.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: how long has current line up been together?

Zdenka(vox),Ash (guitar), Jesse(drums)
ASH: Well we were a 5 piece until March of 2005 when Steve left.
We played the whole rest of the year as a 4 piece,
& know since Brad is leaving we are down to 3 members.
I'm not sure what we will be doing about a replacement at the moment. Kind of sucks!!

5.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: any luck finding a replacement for bass player?

ASH: The plan is that Zdenka will play bass and do vocals. When she feels comfortable doing both that is the way it will stay. Personally I kind of want to stay a 3 piece. The less people to deal with the betterha, ha, ha Nothing is definite yet.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Talk about your Cd "To Exist and Endure" on Ibex Moon records...

ESTURARY *To Exist and Endure* OUT NOW on Ibex Moon RecordsASH: The album came out in June of 2004 so it's been available for a while.
I'm still happy with it.
Anyone into brutal thrashing death metal should not be disappointed.

7.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what is the song "Of Weakening Stone" about... what inspired the lyrics?

ASH: I was going through some major life changes at the time I wrote the initial lyrics for that song. I've always considered myself a "strong" person, but at that time I was surrounded by a number of weak willed individuals. I felt like the life was getting sucked out of me, & my strength was depleting somewhat. That particular song is about dealing with the situationat least from my point of view. Zdenka put her twist on it as well, so it turned into a joint effort.

8. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Can we expect a new Cd from ESTUARY in the near future?

ASH: Yes, I hope sometime this year! The songs are written but need to be tightened up for the studio.

9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any offers to release "To Exist and Endure" on vinyl? ASH: No, but that would be fucking killer!!

10. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: You recently played in California and Tijuana, Mexico the next day... what was that like for you... which crowd gave the best response to yer musak?

ASH: It was great!! Stressful at times, but well worth it. The crowd response at both shows was really good. There were more people in LA though, so it sounded bigger I guess you could say.

11. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any merchandise available from the band for sale to the public? (list items and prices)
ASH: At the moment we only have:
CD "To Exist & Endure" $12(US)/$14(elsewhere)
HOODIES logo on front/ancient entwined serpents symbol on back. $25(US)/$30(elsewhere). All our t-shirts are sold-out at the moment, but we will have new ones soon with Mark Riddick artwork.

12. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what is the last Cd you bought recently... any bands you have seen live... that you would recommend checking out?

ASH: I think it was Vision Divine "The Perfect Machine". Lately I've been borrowing out of print vinyl off a good friend of mine & putting them on CD. I'm not bootlegging themthey're just for my own collection. Killer stuff like SCHIZO(Italy), RENEGADE, TROJAN, & tons of other stuff. I'd say definitely check out INFINITUM OBSCURE from Tijuana, AVENGER OF BLOOD(NV) & CRUCIFIED MORTALS(OH).

13.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: any last words, comments? thanks for the interview

ASH: Thank you for the interview. Best of luck with Dark Recollections(I still worship that record) zine. Everyone get in touch.
