DEATHEVOKATION interview for Dark Recollections 'Zine

Interview answered by Gotz
1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: For those not familiar with DEATHEVOKATION give a brief band bio...

Gtz: Heya Wilhelm my friend, it was great meeting you in person at the Rigor Mortis show, a lot of the local Thrashers came out to watch these guys lay the stage to waste, what a night it was. Anyways, Deathevokation was founded in January of 2005 when I called up a few of my best friends with only one promise: there will never be any success with this band, no-one will like it down here and it will be tons of fun, hahahha, promised! Brian Shuff joined up right away, we both listen to exactly the same music anyways and he couldn't wait to get started. Tushant Bonner joined up the next day and the day following that I called up Steven Nelson and he joined on bass right away, easy as that. It was just 4 friends getting together to play Death Metal the only way I know it, and we recorded the demo only 10 weeks later. After the demo release Tushant Bonner was replaced by Scott Ellis who is what seems to be a temporary member, since he has to concentrate on his college education and has very limited time, but we will see.

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Introduce current band members... who does what, plays what instruments?

Gtz: I myself do vocals and guitar, Brian Shuff is on guitars and both of us write all the music, while Steven Nelson plays bass and has a very busy schedule due to his main band Winterthrall. But he is always there for us and always gives more than 110% when it is time to play live or record, a true animal. Scott Ellis plays drums and just joined the fold; we haven't even really gotten to jam yet, only once or twice to see if we will click. We will see what the future holds when it comes to him but the rest of us will be in Deathevokation till the end of our days. But who knows, of course it would be awesome to have Scott around for ever, but every now and then live throws you a curve ball, you know, and he seems to have other obligation as of now. Oh, and Scott plays Xbox 360, hahaha

3. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How did the different band members meet.. and what is it hard meeting the right people to form DEATHEVOKATION?

Gtz: How many real friends does one have in live? 5, maybe 6? And how lucky do you have to be for those guys to like to play traditional Death Metal, not stupid rockstars like most other musicians but simple fans, and to actually play an instrument (that you need) decent enough? See, there was a lot of luck involved, but here we are, 4 friends having the most fun we can have playing the only form of music I know. We are not one of those bands where strangers get together in order to make it big or become local rockstars, we are just friends and FANS! So, if anyone ever drops out of DE, it will be very hard to find a replacement, obviously, but we are very confident that this band will last for a long fucking time.

4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: In today's polluted metal scene it is a breath of fresh air to find bands like yours that are influenced by the 90s death metal scene... what inspired you to play this type of music?

Gtz: Being simple fans of Death Metal set the course for us, there was no masterplan, no goal, we just got together and played what we felt natural. Brian and I love this old, morbid sounding Death Metal over everything else, and since the two of us are writing all the music, that's what you get. I am 32 years old and have had the exact same taste in Metal for over 15 years now, it will never change and that's what you hear in Deathevokation's sound; Its not like we got inspired to play this style, it's just who we are. If you consider that I am from Germany it may all make a bit more sense, too. That's why that "US" sound is missing in DE, hahahaalthough we don't sound like Morgoth, either.

5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Talk about your debut demo "Blood" ... how did the metal underground receive it... how many have been sold, have you traded demos with bands from overseas?

Gtz: There are over 400 copies in circulation by now, a number that I would have never expected possible when we first recorded. And by putting it out on cassette we already destroyed any hopes of selling a lot of them anyways, or so we thought, hahha! On top of that we have traded with dozens of bands from all over the world and we even traded shirts with one band, namely Sinister from Holland. And the magazine/fanzine reaction has been the biggest surprise of all. I hands down expected to get only nasty and bad reviews, but I am still waiting for anyone to dislike the demo, which truly astonishes me. It seems that there are more old farts out there than I thought possible, hahaha! Especially South America and Europe have been kind to us so far.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What is the song "Embers of a dying world" about what inspired it?

Gtz: Really it was movies, comics, dark tales and the news channels. To see how people in leadership positions destroy and have killed in order to accomplish their own, selfish goals, how they don't even retreat in face of obvious defeat, how man has mastered the art of nuclear devastation and threatens with it daily, it really spurred me on to write those lyrics. Greed and lust for power are terrible things when driving those in control, and to see how abstract the loss of human lives seems to be to them, it is gut wrenching.

DARK RECOLLECTIONS: 7. Talk about your debut Cd for xtreem music from Spain... ?(give Cd name, expected Cd release.., etc) 8. Can we expect all new songs on debut Cd or would there any demo songs on it?

Gtz: Out of nowhere we got this offer from Dave fuckin Rotten! I almost lost it, I had been a huge fan of Drowned and had bought everything he released back in the day. And to get the offer to sign with him, it didn't take us one second to consider, it was a done deal! Just like us he is first and for all a simple and real FAN, not a businessman. He signs with his heart, not with his calculator. Obviously bands like us are a great way for a label to lose money, hahah, not make any. Our style is the furthest from the mainstream you can have in the Death Metal Underground these days, anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. We will release the album the end of 2006. It will be called "The Chalice of Ages" and the title track will be a "The Monument" partII in regards to the lyrics. There will be 8 original songs and one cover song. The cover song will be of a band hardly anyone has ever heard of, the mighty Antropomorphia from Holland. Two of the demo songs will make it onto the debut, namely "The Monument" and "Embers of a dying World". Embers is completely rewritten, half the riffs are changed and gone. We were only around for 10 weeks by the time we recorded the demo and we never felt happy with the demo versions of Blood and Embers, but maybe in the end people will prefer the demo version!? Who know, time shall tell.

9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: DEATHEVOKATION has done a lot of shows in Tijuana, Mexico... what are some of the bands that you have shared the stage with... best/worst show you have played?

Gtz: That's all Roberto's (Infinitum Obscure) and Tony Eastman's fault, hahaha! Those two fools allowed us to open up some fantastic shows down in Tijuana. The best show was our first ever show, when we opened up for Hirax. Brian Shuff damaged his guitar's floating tremolo just before the set started and he was horribly out of tune. It sounded so bad, it almost sounded great, hahahaand we were laughing our asses off while we played. We had no choice since we had no backup guitar and no other band tuned to our tuning that night. The worst was the night Unleashed played. To see that Unleashed had to play in front of only a handful of people only because the local scene down there boycotted their show was heartbreaking. The guys had traveled half way around the world for that? Some other promoter had fucked up the Morbid Angel show a few weeks earlier and blamed her own idiocy and own incompetence on the promoters of the Unleashed show stupid local politics that the unknowing fans actually believed, what a stupid, selfish, lying bitch. But Unleashed still had a blast and Brian actually spoke of a "religious experience" he had that night when he saw them, hahah!

10. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Would southern California witness DEATHEVOKATION live in the near future...any offers to tour?

Gtz: I hope we will in the future, but in the very near future it doesn't seem too likely. As I said, we have to get ready for the recording of the album and so far we had only 2 jams with Scott. So we really need to bust some ass. And after that Scott has to go to college and I myself have job obligations for the rest of the year as well, so it looks grim when it comes to live shows for now. But once all that is taken care of we want to full bore attack! If we ever tour than it would be in Europe, and most likely self-financed since a band like ours will never in a lifetime generate enough interest to validate any label tour-support.

11. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Are you a demo, vinyl collector... what are some of the demos, albums ... you are proud to own?
