EMPTINESS interview for Dark Recollections 'zine

Interview answered by N.D.
1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: For those not familiar with the hellish entity known as EMPTINESS give a brief band bio.

Emptiness is a death/black metal band from Belgium. Since its creation in 1998, the band became a reference in the belgian underground scene. We recorded a few demos and an album in 2003(guilty to exist-painkiller recs). Last year, after a big line-up change, we've started to compose new material for a future album. We hope to release it in early 2007

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Introduce current line up... who does what... plays what intruments?

EMPTINESS line up from left to right :Phorgath ( Bass & Lead Vox),Naerguth (rhythm guitar),Glaurung (drums) N.D (lead guitar/vox) Our actual line up is
Phorgath: bass vocals
Naerguth: rythm guitars
Glaurung: drums
N.D :lead guitars and vocals.
Phorgath and I(N.D) lead the band , we compose everything.

3. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Whose idea was it to name the band EMPTINESS and why was name chosen?

The Original concept was created by phorgath and me, and we both decided of the name. Most of the lyrics are practically absracted, but still drowned in a nihilist concept. This emptiness concerns the existences and their consicences in the abstraction of time. It's a state where no creation is possible, actually impossible to reach. We describe the loss of conceptual values and established morals in other realities or in oniric facts. By the way, the band pays much more attention to his music than the lyrics. We're musicians before all.

4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How many demos were released prior to debut Cd ?(can they still be obtained from you?)
Only two demos are actually available: " Eternal Rising " ,recorded in 2000, and " Necrorgy ", recorded a year later. A new promo CD can be downloaded from our website.

5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What was the response to demos like? (good.. bad?) We noticed good reports and chronicles in the press or on the web. We sold a lot of demos to our concerts too. The responses were good, and motivating.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Talk about your debut Cd "Guilty to Exist" on Pain Killer Records

We took about two years to compose it. This album describes perfectly what we wanted at that time.
The sound is dirty, loud and chaotic. The music never stops, between death metal arrangements, black metal riffs and industrial ambients parts. We're proud of this first album. (17 tracks, total time: 44min). Nowadays, our music gets a different approach.

7. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How did the deal with PainKiller Records come about?
They were interested to sign us after the release of the " Necrorgy " demo. Actually, we're not in deal with them anymore. We have no concrete news.
8. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Not many bands nowadays play your style of music... why was this style chosen?

We simply play what we would like to hear. It's a mix of our personnal approach of metal music and the influences we evolved with. We like to mix our music with ambient or noise parts, to create a deeper atmosphere.

9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Have you had any offers from other record labels to release your music outside of the European Union?
Actually, nothing very serious.

10. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Have you played live much since "Guilty to Exist" was released...what is an EMPTINESS show like... how do people react to your music?
Emptiness played lot of times in Belgium, where we have a great success. We really enjoyed the dates abroad too. The crowd seems always receptive. Our shows are traditionnal, we just play our music, no artifices. Even in bad conditions, we try to give our best.

11. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What are some of your favorite bands from the Scandinavian death metal scene of the late 90s?

I'm not so much into the scandinavian scene. I'm rather into american death metal (suffocation, malevolent creation, etc) or english (napalm death, bolt thrower, )

12. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any merchandise available from EMPTINESS for sale to the public?(list items and prices, and how to get stuff)
All the merchandising is available on our website www.emptiness.be
