WOLVEN ANCESTRY interview for Dark Recollections 'zine

Interview answered by Fraust.

1.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: for those not familiar with WOLVEN ANCESTRY give a brief band bio.
FRAUST: WOLVEN ANCESTRY started as a solo project by myself (Fraust) back in September of 2005. I wrote and recorded the album myself over the span of a few months, then recruited Defiler from the band FLESHCRAFT to do vocals. I showed the album around to local musicians, and eventually put together a full 6-piece band. At this point, we have only been practicing as a band for about a month.

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Introduce current band members(who does what, plays what instruments?

FRAUST: our current line up consists of:
Fraust - Guitars, Backup/Clean Vocals
Defiler - Vocals
Bridgge - Guitar
Sildav - Bass
Dodsgud - Synth
Guyzus - Drums

3.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: who came up with the name WOLVEN ANCESTRY and why was name chosen?

FRAUST: Our original drummer came up with the name. We liked it because it reflects our animalistic past, a time when human beings had not yet weakened themselves with technology and greed.

4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what has WOLVEN ANCESTRY released so far? (demos, eps Cds?)

FRAUST: "THE WRATH OF GAIA, full length album. That is all for now.

5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: talk about your upcoming Cd release... (give album name, release date, who would release?

WOLVEN ACESTRY *Wrath of Gaia* Cd available soon!!!We are actually in the process
of getting our debut Cd "THE WRATH OF GAIA" pressed, so it should be ready within the next few weeks.
We will be distributing them independently for now.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what is the song "a mythological anticipation of omnipotent immortality enshrouds our vicious conquest" about... what inspired its lyrics?

FRAUST: Defiler wrote all of the lyrics, but we've talked about their meanings before. That song was inspired by Viking conquest and Norse mythology. This wasn't really the central theme of the album, however. He wrote the lyrics to the entire album in one night, before even knowing what the bands' ideology was... so the lyrics on this album are basically whatever he had in his head that night. On the next album, they will more strictly adhere to our misanthropic/pagan concepts.

7.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Not many bands in Canada play your style of music... what inspired you to play this type of music?

FRAUST: This is the kind of music I love. I noticed that most of the "big" Black Metal bands today have dropped the epic/melodic sound in favor of derivative "speed-black metal" which lacks emotion and variety. My vision was to stay away from this wave of modern black metal and create something that reflected my admiration for the vast natural landscapes of my country.

8.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: is WOLVEN ANCESTRY a studio only band... do you get to play live?

FRAUST: We have not yet played live, but we will."

9.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: if you could go back in time... what time period would you choose... and what do you see yourself as in that era?

FRAUST: I would go back to the 16th century, when French and English explorers first settled in Canada. For two reasons: firstly, they enjoyed a high standard of living because of the abundant resources and sparse populations, and secondly, I would love to observe the way Native Canadians lived before we forced our lifestyle upon them and spoiled their culture. As for my job in that society... my short life being all I know, I would obviously see myself as a bard

10. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what types of music do you listen to? (death, black, dark ambient, thrash, doom) do you feel your choice of music influences WOLVEN ANCESTRY's music?

FRAUST: To be honest, I dont really listen to music very often. I will listen to some vintage black metal or classical music here and there, but it is rare. I feel that keeping my mind free of influences allows me to write music that comes straight from my heart. It's a very primal thing for me.

11.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what is your opinion of today's so called black metal scene... any bands you like... dislike?

FRAUST: I dislike all the Black Metal bands out there who do not understand how to compose good music, they are making a mockery of the genre. Black Metal is an infinitely malleable genre, and yet these bands are all copying each other- and doing it poorly. As for bands that I like- I'm not very keen on the underground scenes in other countries, but I know that the bands I've seen here in Canada are pretty amazing. Woods of Ypres, Utlagr, Vanquished, Nefastus Dies, Magister Dixit- all great Black Metal bands.

12.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: any merchandise available from the band? (list items, prices and how to get stuff)
FRAUST: At this point we only have the album available, but we plan on having shirts made soon. If you are interested, keep checking www.myspace.com/wolvenancestry for samples of our music, and news regarding such things.

13.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: any last words, comments? thanks for the interview

FRAUST: I would just like to urge any readers to check out the bands I listed above. There is alot of very good Canadian Black Metal, it just hasn't been exposed. Thank you for interviewing me.
