FLESH interview for Dark Recollections 'zine
Interview answered by Pete Flesh
1. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Give us a brief band bio..
PETE FLESH: Many different aspects led me to start this project, but of course mainly my lust and desire for this kind of metal. A place where I can put all my atmosphere and energy to morbidity. The idea for this album is something that has grown bigger through many years, this is nothing that just popped-up some months before I recorded it. Even if I had this idea some time before, I usually say that the start that really got me going and working was when Chuck [Schuldiner] died, I cant even put in words how much that person meant to me-- like to many others. Not just when it comes to the music, he was a living proof of that if you had a vision, even if no one else believed in it and on the way you get some enemies, you should follow it to a hundred percent. This is something I always tried to do, but when you play in a band you for example must compromise on many different things, like how you want a song to be. In FLESH I can do whatever I want. I dont just see FLESH like a project where I can put ideas for old school sounding Death and Black Metal, its much more for me. If I want to put in an idea that in general has nothing to do with this genre, I do it. This way it also gets more personal. In the end its all about the atmosphere you create and if you deliver your visions in an honest way.
2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what has Flesh released so far? (demos, Eps, promos?)
PETE FLESH: - So far I have only released the "dodsangest" CD.
3.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: how would you describe FLESH to someone who has not heard its music yet?
PETE FLESH: - Old school Death Metal with some old school Black Metal elements, mixed with some personal ideas and atmospheres.
4 DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Talk about your debut Cd "Dodsangest" (meaning of word)
PETE FLESH: The album title means death angst in english. I wanted a title that was personal and had a strong meaning to myself. To be able to record this CD was a big vision I have had for many years, and to finally do it was a really satisfying feeling. I could never dream of the responce that I have got. I did the music out of pure passion and did it totally for myself. So, its cool to see that alot of people enjoy the album.
5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How did the deal with Iron Fist Records come about?
PETE FLESH: - I knew the label boss since many years through my involments in both DECEIVER and MAZE OF TORMENT. I told him about my idea to record this album and he got interested directly.
6.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Has there been any interest from any labels outside of Europe to release your music?
PETE FLESH: - Not any serious offers, but then I have not really search either. But I guess that the label will start looking now when this positive response have shown.
7. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: On Cd its says you play all instruments and use a session drummer... do you see this
changing in the future... or is FLESH a studio only band?
PETE FLESH: - This will not change as that would destroy the idea for this solo project. I maybe turn FLESH into a live-act after at least one more release and then I of course will bring in live musicians, but thats all.
8. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Not many bands nowadays play your style of music... what inspired you to play
this style of music?
PETE FLESH: - This style of Death Metal is what I grew up with and mostly still listen to, its in my veins. I would not be able to do super fast blastbeats Death metal even if I tried. I can only do what I have in me.
9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Care to talk about your other projekts you are involved in?
- PETE FLESH: For two years I have had the band DECEIVER. A band that could be described as "Thrashing Heavy Metal". We have released one m-cd "Deceiver", one full-lenght "Riding with the Reaper" and in March 2006 our second full-lenght "Holov Posen Tro May Trot" will be out. On this album I also does the vocals as our old singer had to quit. The music on the new one is a bit more aggressive then before. I guess that if you both are into bands like MOTRHEAD and POSSESSED you could enjoy this. Before DECEIVER I was a member of MAZE OF TORMENT for 12 years and 5 albums.
10.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: what is the song "Six Evil Eyes" about... what inspired its music and lyrics?
PETE FLESH: - To take it brief. A priest that have raped and killed a virgin. The priest have already the "evil" in him, but then also get possessed by a demon because of his sins. He gets two personalitys and both tries to kill each other. The "good" priest then sees the dead virgin coming back with a child. This is actually inspired from a dream I had. Most of the music was already written to the song and fitted great with the lyrics.
11. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What are some of your favorite bands of all times? - PETE FLESH: POSSESSED, DEATH, AUTOPSY, MOTRHEAD, KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE, SADUS, JUDAS PRIEST, MAYHEM, SLAYER, DARK THRONE, NIFELHEIM etc. The list could go on.
12. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any merchandise available from the band? PETE FLESH: - Right now its only the album. But the label are printing some t-shirts this month. For prices etc. drop me a e-mail.
13.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any last words , comments? thanks for the interview . - PETE FLESH: Thanx alot for the support by doing this interview. If anyone needs more information about FLESH they are welcome to write. Support the underground!!!!
