Basic Sequence:

  1. To give an idea of choreography, movement pattern and general idea.
    To give a general relational ideas, between the figures and bar of music, introduction to the basics, and the joining of various figures to form a particular dance.
  2. I use this method when teaching en mass, a group of 30 to 80 students.
    Such is the pattern I normally use when teaching a large group of 20 students and more. I do need to give a demonstration, but it is slightly later when the group has got started off. It helps in a faster progress too, as prior to the demonstration the movement require the students to use their own logic, imagination and understanding of the natural body-movements. So this section is also as a general guide for those who would be required to teach a large group.
  3. This should help ones teaching themselves.
    Dancing is very complex movement, with the whole body, mind and soul taking part in it. Here an attempt is made to build up a dance from the very bare basic moves. It is always advisable to learn from a teacher.
  4. Introduction to more advanced figures.
    The idea is to have simple basic moves to understand first. Once this is achieved then the more complex body movements could be concentrated upon, especially those that are common to all the ten dances covered in the Dance Sport. Which in turn will lead to a better understanding of the more complex figures given later in the section.
    Please note that the complex movements are really the natural movements, which occur subconsciously. Knowing them is better, but it is absolutely necessary to produce them when dancing as naturally as it occurs in the day to day activities.
  5. For social dancers.
    These are a pattern for those in a hurry and are simply interested in knowing some really simple movements for a social occasion.
  6. To be able to dance with a partner new to Ballroom and Latin dances.
    These patterns help greatly when required to dance with a person who is absolutely new to Ballroom and Latin Dances. This should take less than half a minute for the dancer to be able to teach his non-dancing partner, at least one basic move. Then later on when dancing the other moves can be added slowly as the partner shows confidence.
  7. To understand basic body movements.
    Just knowing the steps is not enough to be able to dance with a partner. It is necessary to understand how the body moves in a complex manner.
  8. Introduction to more complex movement patterns.
    The movements and events occurring between the beats, such as, guiding, balance, rise and fall, contrary body movements, force applications, resistance, sway, tilts, planning, giving commands and receiving acknowledgements, understanding postures, keeping co-ordinates and a host of other requirements.
  9. Introduction to reducing the communication gap.
    This is also to reduce the communication gap before I start dealing with more complex movements.
  10. Relation between various dances and understanding common components.
    All the dances are related and all have some common movements. These common movements vary very little from one type of dance to another. It’s this understanding of such movements that make it easier to dance numerous dances, and remember movement pattern for all of them.
