Rumba: Basic Sequence 4

The first basic sequence.
Basic Sequence:
1. Basic
2. Fan
3. Walk
4. Alemana
5. Basic
6. Fan
7. Walk
8. Hockey Stick
9. Curl
10. Spiral
This is a simply a 180 degrees (1/2 turn) turn taken on the slow step for the count 4,1.

Curl: Start Position:
The man and the lady are facing and square to one another with a larger gap between them. In the diagram both are at 45 degrees (1/8 turn) toward the right; thus the man is diagonal to the wall on his right side. Both have a comfortable gap between the feet and weight is on the Right foot (Man) and Left foot (Lady).

Note the position of the feet now at the start in the figure above. In the preceding figure man has stepped diagonally forward on the Right foot, and the lady has stepped diagonally back on the Left foot.

Hold: Hold with both the hands is maintained for the entire figure.

Count 1:
There is no feet movement.

Count 2:
Man steps forward and the lady steps back as in basic. But in addition when dancing this step and the next both the dancers come slightly closer as when dancing the basic. Also hold by the fingers, Left hand (Man) with Right hand (Lady) and Right hand (Man) with Left hand (Lady).

Count 3:
Man replaces weight on the foot at the back (Right foot), and lady replaces weight on the foot ahead (Left foot). This is similar as danced in the basic.

Count 4, 1:
Man steps diagonally back and leads the lady with a strong pull acting through man’s Left hand and lady’s Right hand, to move diagonally forward and step for the count 4. Immediately later the man begins to turn the lady’s counter clockwise. The lady swivels on the Right foot from her left to end facing in the same direction as the man. The lady retains the Left foot in light contact with the floor, thus after the turn Left leg crosses the Right leg from the front. There is no turn for the man.

Just prior to the turn the man begins to raise his Left and lady’s Right hand over the lady’s head to facilitate the turn without having to let go of the lady. Man’s Right hand follows through firmly with the lady’s turn. This type of hold helps in controlling the turning speed and assists in balance for the lady.
