Foxtrot: Basic Sequence: Part 1

The first basic sequence.

Please Note: This is a sequel to Waltz: Basic Sequence

Basic Sequence
1. Quarter Turn
2. Natural Pivot Turn
3. Reverse Pivot Turn
4. Under Arm Turn
5. Side Step

First Lesson
Move forward with the Left foot taking a step such that the upper and inner thighs brush against each other and stay that way at the full extent of the stride as well. Step on the heel first and going flat on the foot as the Right foot closes in towards the Left foot. Next, move the Right foot forward similar to above. In this process two steps are taken forward for which the counts is "Slow Step" and "Slow Step".

"Slow Step" or "Slow" both are the same and take two beats, whereas the "Quick Step" or "Quick" takes one beat of the music.

Now the Left foot is free, which is moved to the side with respect to ones self. Then move the Right foot to the Left foot and take weight on to it, and simultaneously releasing the Left foot from the floor. The counts for these moves are "Quick" and "Quick".

Next move backward with the Left foot and then the Right foot for the next two counts of "Slow Step". After this, the movement is to the side, which is exactly similar to the one given above.

Thus, the rhythm for this movement is "Slow Step", "Slow Step", "Quick", and "Quick". (When counting with the movement the ‘and’ is omitted from the rhythm). Thus, the rhythm is "Slow Step, Slow Step, Quick, Quick" or "Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick".

Summary: Forward Half
1 Forward step with the Left foot Slow Step or Slow
2 Forward Step with the Right foot Slow Step or Slow
3 Side Step with the Left foot Quick
4 Close Step with the Right foot Quick
Summary: Backward Half
5 Backward Step with the Left foot Slow Step or Slow
6 Backward Step with the Right foot Slow Step or Slow
7 Side Step with the Left foot Quick
8 Close Step with the Right foot Quick
Next, you would be repeating all the movements from serial number one above.

Note: This above exercise is mainly for the Man, and for the Lady it is the Man’s counter part movement. However, it is advisable for both the Man and the Lady to know each other’s movements in this case. The following extension of the above exercise is particularly helpful to get continuous unbroken rhythm in movement, especially when the space is limited

The above exercise will make you progress to the left continuously. When you reach the wall on the left side end with the Right foot forward for which the count would be "Check Step". After this move the Left foot back or if it is already at the back then simply transfer weight on it counting "Slow". Followed by side, close and counting it as "Quick", "Quick". The next Slow Step would be moving forward.

When you near the wall on the right end with the left foot moving back, and count for it would be "Check Step". The next step would be to move the Right foot forward, or it is already in forward position then simply transfer weight to it and count "Slow step" which is followed with the Quick steps to the side.

Getting used to "Both the Steps"

It is important to remember that:

  1. All steps taken are similar to simple walking steps
  2. Only one foot is on the ground
  3. Keep the back erect and firm as when one would require when walking with a book balanced on the head.
  4. Keep the shoulders continuously parallel to the wall in the front.
  5. Count the rhythm continuously and loud and with the steps.
  6. When progressing to the left the quick steps always come after the slow step with the Right foot. Similarly when progressing to the right, the quick steps come after a slow step with the Left foot.
  7. If the preceding Slow step to Quick steps is moving forward then the succeeding slow step is always back wards. Similarly, if the preceding Slow Step is backwards then the succeeding Slow step to quicksteps is forward.
