All the exercises given below are individual based. Wherever one is to practise with a partner it would be specifically mentioned. In addition, the alternate pattern is given, which is very helpful especially when practising in pairs. The hold, in these cases if one is not familiar with the conventional hold necessary, then either or both partners can hold each other with both the hands the partners shoulders. Also, stand such that the shoulders are parallel/square to a wall, and keep it as such through all the exercises that are without any turns.
First Lesson: Starting Position:
One should be standing erect with feet and toes together with the
body weight balanced only on one foot. The other foot is just off
the floor, which is the foot to be moved, when one commences to
dance.
One can start a dance with any foot, however for the purpose of this exercise we would be commencing with the left foot for both the man and the woman. So transfer full body weight on the right foot, such that the left foot is free and ready to move. In this position both the feet are together and the knees are relaxed. The Left heel is kept off the floor.
This is important as when the body weight is carried on one foot the upper body shifts a little and naturally to that side for the balance. This gives the partner a clear indication of the foot to commence with a movement.
Thus in this position, the right foot is the "Stationary foot" and the left foot is the "Moving foot".
Continued First Lesson: Fun Exercise
For a small practical fun exercise, which also has a very serious
side to it, stand facing a dance partner with a comfortable
distance maintained between each other. Both should stand erect
with weight equally distributed on both the feet, which is the
start position for this exercise. The dance partner will have the
eyes closed and keep both the hands on the on your two shoulders.
Now the partner has three positions to interpret. (a) When the weight is on both the feet, which is the start position as mentioned above (b) When the full body weight is on the Left foot (c) When the weight is on the Right foot. (Note: When weight is on one foot only the other foot should be "clean" off the floor.)
The next part is to assume a position from the Start Position and the partner interpreting it. This would require both the partners to make an effort to help each other. The dance partner would need to hold firmly to get the feel of your movement and move accordingly, along with you. Where as you will need to make an effort to indicate it without sacrificing the erect position of the body.
