Waltz: Basic Sequence: Part 5

The first basic sequence.
Basic Sequence:
1. First Part
2. Second Part
3. Third Part
4. Fourth Part
    Reverse/Natural Turn
    Hesitation
    Combination
    Under Arm Turn

Fifth Lesson: Third Part/Combination
This is truly a combination as its name suggests. Thus when moving forward do the Second part/Hesitation. Thus for the counts of "1 to 3", move forward for the fist count and hesitate for the next two counts. Next movement is backwards for which the first part is repeated, and which is ‘backward, to the side, close feet’.

If one commences with the Left foot forward for the count of ‘1’, then bring the Right foot to Left foot but do not rest it on the floor. Just hesitate there in that position for the counts ‘2’ and ‘3’. Next, move the Right foot backward for the count of ‘4’. Bring the Left foot close to the Right foot, curve it, and move it to the side for the count of ‘5’. Close the Right foot to the Left foot and take weight on it for the count ‘6’. Now the Left foot should be free to move forward to repeat the above with counts from ‘7’ to ‘12’.

1. Combination
During the forward half the pause movement is done for two counts, 2 and 3, which we will call hesitation to differentiate it from pausing for one beat. Thus the forward movement is a Hesitation for one bar, i.e. three beats, and the backward movement is regular, i.e. the figure Closed Change.

Alternative Pattern 1
Start with the Right foot moving forward and do the hesitation, and when moving backward with the Left foot do the Regular.

Alternative Pattern 2
Start with the Left foot moving backward and do the hesitation. When moving the Right foot forward do the Regular.

Alternative 3
Start with the Right foot moving backward, do the hesitation, and when moving forward with the Left foot do the Regular.

Practice this exercise with a partner with all the alternatives given. Then practise the four parts covered so far. Remember, if one starts with the exercise with forward movement then every time one is moving forward for the count of ‘1’.
