Formations

The term "Unit" as used in this game, actually refers to a group of men and vehicles, usually of regiment or brigade strength. Therefore, all "units" will have the option of choosing a formation for their men/vehicles.

Formations generally allow the unit to trade fire power and armor for mobility, although any other number of formation types are feasible. Although the player will have to check the scenario to see which formation types are available, a number of standard types will usually be allowed:

Line: A standard formation for advancing units

Column: A formation used to move units quickly but usually associated with high losses should they run into opposition.

In the "Panama" scenario, these and other formation types have been defined and associated with different armor, fire power and movement cost values.

Note: Remember to always check scenario notes since formation types may change drastically. A scenario playing the Napoleonic or Peloponnesian Wars for example, will surely have many and more complex formation options.

Note: All formations have an "Auto-Retreat" option which, if true, prompts the unit to retreat if attacked, thus taking only 50% of the losses it would normally incur. This allows for defensive and rear-guard actions by weaker combatants.
