UGANDA CRIES

When I was a little girl,
living with my folks
Uganda, Africa, make-shift homes,
dirt roads.
We didn't have very much,
poverty a way of life
Together, strong unity,
our love, cherished price.

They came like a thief,
abducted, dark of night
Children, me,
thousands begging in our plight.
Soldiers, rebels,
enemies instilled horrific fear
Helpless families,
couldn't rescue us, or come near.

Together, like animals,
long distance we walked
Hours in jungles,
no spoken words, silent thoughts.
Armed with rifles,
had we tried to escape, even run
No water, food, shelter,
reign of terror had just begun.

Held captive, bound hands,
tied from behind
Can't remember how many,
raped me at a time.
Age limit had no meaning,
if I were seven, or ten
Didn't matter how many,
repeatedly, Again! Again!

Sexual slavery, rebel leader,
took me as a wife
Birth of two babies,
no prospective future, no life.

My family disowned me,
ashamed to show their face
Rejection feared, perhaps,
in shadows of my disgrace.

Tortured, hard labor, beaten,
silent abuse
Savagely raped,
innocent child of my youth.
Freedom, salvation,
see the want in my eyes
This is my story,
tearful words,
Uganda cries.
