"DID YOU THINK?"

Did you think when she carried you,
pregnant nine months
That she didn't feel your kick,
your mighty little punch?
Did you think when she held you,
very first time
That she didn't say "I love you,
precious angel, mine"?

Did you think when she was forced,
signed her name
That guilt, hurt, suffering,
would cause her no pain?
Did you think she never looked,
searched many years
That she cried so very hard,
shed many countless tears?

Did you think she didn't think of you,
in any way
Drugs, suicide, depression,
survived each day?
Did you think on birthdays,
Holidays, all the time
That her heart didn't bleed,
her eyes, so very blind?

Did you think that she didn't try,
adoption agency
That knowing information,
was held confidentially?
Did you think she would forget,
reminder stretch marks
That the baby she relinquished,
haunted her in the dark?

Did you think when they met,
was such a blessed day
That she got down on her knees,
thankful, she did pray?
Did you think birthmothers,
never miss their child
Look upon her face, son,
behold your mothers' smile.
