English introduction

This page would like to become a little guide to the area of A Ulla in the central region of Galicia (nortwest Spain). The area has not been recognized as a "comarca" within the plans of regionalization put forward by the autonomous government but it has been sang by the poets for centuries and it is alive in its lands and people. Among the parishes, the most important are in Galician writer Ramón Otero Pedrayo's account: Arnois, Oca, Berres, Ribeira, Cora, Vea, Barcala, San Mamede de Ribadulla, Santa Cruz de Ribadulla, San Miguel de Sarandón, San Pedro de Sarandón, Teo and Carcacía. The Pico Sacro (literally "Holy Peak"), the River Ulla, the "pazos" or country houses and the "castros", fortified celtic settlements, are together with the festivals in the Summer the most popular atractions in the valley. Among the festivities of the area, the Entroido ("Carnival") must be mentioned here for its curious "coplas", traditional folksongs from which a sample of verses are offered in several sections of this page.
