Shirley Turner was first inspired to propose legislation banning the outsourcing of IT and other state contracts to overseas companies, she had no clue that the bill No. 1349 would incite both heated lobbying by technology groups against it and a wildfire of support from laid-off technology workers. Since its introduction in March 2002, the bill has generated more response than any other piece of legislation introduced by the Democrat from Ewing in her nine-year political career. | * *** The Disposable Workforce: A worker's Perspective In the United States, President Herbert Hoover's promise of a "chicken in every pot" has taken on new meaning over the past several decades as American consumption of poultry has steadily increased. In 1075, per capita consumption of chicken was approximately 40 pounds; by 1996, it was 71.6 pounds and is projected to reach 81 pounds in three years. In 1992, per capita consumption of chicken surpassed that of beef for the first time. In addition to an increasing demand by the American public for white chicken meat, the opening of new international markets within the past decade has further increased the boom in poultry production. The two largest importers of US broilers include Russia, where consumers prefer dark meat and China, where chicken feet have become a delicacy. In sum poultry processing, although a relatively young industry, has become one of the most profitable industries in the nation. publicjustice.org/ (LUF note: After screen appears click on "The Disposable Workforce" and the report will come up.) |

All that's missing are the chains " Anonymous IT person involved in an outsourcing Outsourcing is seen by many observers as one of the pillars of modern management and economic practice. It is also one of the most difficult management topics to discuss. In many groups, the word "outsourcing" is not an economic or management concept but an emotional and political concept. Indeed, within an environment where hard-edged slogans such as "don't automate, obliterate", "lean and mean", "non-core" and "zero added value" are applied to jobs and, by default, to the people who have been doing those jobs, it is very difficult to avoid emotion and value-laden opinions.
