WILSON AND BADAL TOP 2007 WHEELER OPEN

Candidate Master Brandon Wilson and Brandon Badal walked away winners of the Open and Amateur sections respectively, of the 2007 staging of the Robert Wheeler Chess Open held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Sunday.

Wilson, a first year student at the University of the West Indies, secured the Open title after scoring five points from six games, which included critical victories over National Masters Geoffrey Byfield and Equitable Brown.

MASTERS KO RND OF 16 GETS UNDERWAY

National master Jomo Pitterson advanced to the 2007 MKO ¼ Finals by defeating Mark Henry 2½-½. NM Shane Matthews also advanced by blanking JCF President, Ian Wilkinson 3-0. Also joining the round of 8 is NM Equitable Brown who scored a 2½-½ victory over Stuart James, and candidate master Alain Morais with a 3-0 shutout of Gary Hew. Bertram Scott was gifted a place in the round of 8 following the sudden withdrawal of national master Malaku Lorne. Lorne held a commanding 2-0 lead over Scott.

SOLOMON TAKES NEW YEAR’S CHESS TITLE

Junior chess player Mikhail Solomon won his first major chess tournament, when he walked away with the 2007 New Year’s Open Chess title at the Campion College Auditorium over the weekend.

"FM ELLIOTT TO DEFEND BLITZ TITLE AGAINST THE “MAGICIAN” NM SHANE MATTHEWS
Finals Postponed until 2007

FM Warren Elliott, the current Jamaica blitz champion will defend his title this weekend against NM Shane “The Magician” Matthews.

Matthews earned his right to contest the final against Elliott when he sweeped the playoffs with a score of 7 wins from as many games.

Matthews will now face FM Warren Elliott, the defending national blitz chess champion, in a 24-game match next year to determine Jamaica’s champion blitz player for 2006.

Glenmuir regains RBTT Trophy "Beats Campion 2.5/1.5 inthe final"

Glenmuir High regained the RBTT National Schools Chess Championship title, by defeating defending champions Campion College 2.5 – 1.5 in the finals held at the Ardenne High School Library on Saturday.

Campion went 1-0 ahead through Zachary Ramsay, who defeated Mikhail Gilespie on Board 4, after the latter blundered away a piece and failed to recover. Glenmuir however rebounded to level the scores and eventually take a 2-1 lead through clinical victories from Walter Williams on Board 1 and Onaje La Mont on Board 3, against Chad Simeon and Brian Ewbank respectively.
