RIPPERS” DEFEATS THE “BOYZ”

The excitement in the inaugural Lasco Chess League continued to mount when the dust had settled on round 10 action played June 24, 2006 at RBTT Jamaica Bank, Dominica Drive in New Kingston. With the fourth-placed Gladiators having a bye, the resurgent King Rippers pulled off a major upset in defeating the hitherto undefeated Blitzkrieg Boys, the leaders and highest rated team in the competition. This result has thrown the event wide open with four rounds to go as several teams are now in with a chance of grabbing top honours.

With the Boys’ leader NM Malaku Lorne arriving late for his game and defaulting against the Rippers’ NM Robert Wheeler on board one, the attention turned to board two where the future master and talented national junior champion Brandon Wilson had the black pieces against the underdog Ian Wilkinson, the captain of the King Rippers. After a thrilling encounter in a Queen’s Gambit Declined, Wilson resigned on 52 moves shortly after Wilkinson had promoted a pawn to have two queens on the board.

Although 2005 national junior champion Christopher Buchanan won against NM John Powell on board three to spare the blushes of the leaders, the Rippers’ Gary Hew drew with Allan Wilson on board four to ensure that his team won 2 ½ to 1 ½.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, the Knightmares, stayed in contention with a comfortable 3 ½ - ½ victory over the courageous Little Giants with the auspicious Stuart James playing well to hold the NM-destined Equitable Brown on board two after NM Jomo Pitterson had worn down Hakim Buchanan on board one. Mikhail Solomon prevailed over Tewana Mellace on board three while the victors had a default victory on board four.

Varcon CC cemented their third place position with a 4-0 routing of the disintegrating Reggae Knights who defaulted on three boards! On board two Jamaica’s Chess queen WFM Deborah Richards, fresh from her historic performance at the Turin Chess Olympiad, survived the pyrotechnics to defeat Candidate Master Markland Douglas whose flag fell when he appeared to have at least a draw at his disposal.

The standings after the end of the 10th round are: Blitzkrieg Boys 26, Knightmares 25, Varcon CC 23, Gladiators 18, King Rippers 13 ½, Reggae Knights 9 ½ and Little Giants 5. The round 11 matches, to be played on July 8 at the Holy Childhood High School library, are Knightmares - King Rippers, Little Giants - Reggae Knights and Varcon CC – Gladiators. Blitzkrieg Boys have a bye.

BLITZKRIEG BOYS EXTEND LEAD AS KNIGHTMARES GIVES CHASE

The Blitzkrieg Boys registered emphatic 3.5 – 0.5 victories against both Varcon CC and the Little Giants over the weekend to lengthen their lead atop the LASCO Chess League.

The Boys are now on 24.5 points, three full points ahead of their nearest rivals Knightmares, who took over the chase of the leaders from Varcon CC who, after losing to the Boys on Saturday, were defeated by the Knightmares 2.5 – 1.5 on Sunday.

Varcon are now in third place on 19 points, 2.5 points behind the Knightmares, and 1 point ahead of the Gladiators who are on 18 points. The rest of the standings are King Rippers 11, Reggae Knight 9.5 and Little Giants 4.5.

The tournament takes a break this weekend as the 2006 Robert Wheeler Chess Open will be staged at the Guardian Life Building on Trafalgar Road. The League continues on May 13 with the playing of Round 10.

Below are the results of Rounds 8 and 9, and the points standings and individual standings after Round 9.

BLITZKRIEG BOYS LEAD AT HALF WAY MARK
VARCON STORMS INTO SECOND

The Blitzkrieg Boys registered back to back wins over the weekend to take sole leadership of the LASCO Chess League at the half way mark. On Saturday, the Boys outlasted the Gladiators 2.5 1.5 and returned on Sunday to close out the Reggae Knights 4-0.

The Boys are now on 17.5 points, a half point ahead of Varcon CC who rushed into second place with impressive 4-0 victories over both the King Rippers and the Little Giants.

Pre-tournament favourites Knightmares fell to third place on 16 points, after registering a lacklustre 2.5 1.5 win over the Reggae Knights on Saturday.

The rest of the standings going into the second half of the tournament are Gladiators 14, Reggae Knight 8.5, King Rippers 7 and Little Giants 4.

Starting Saturday, the teams will play each other a second time with colours reversed. BLITZKRIEG, KNIGHTMARES ANTICLIMAX
GLADIATORS CLOSE IN ON LEADERS

LASCO CHESS LEAGUE

The much-anticipated clash between the top two seeds in the LASCO Chess League, the Blitzkrieg Boys and the Knightmares, quickly fizzled to a tame 2-2 stalemate on Saturday, as both teams, not wanting to risk their current position atop the standings, agreed to early draws on all four boards. Playing for the Blitzkrieg Boys were Malaku Lorne, Brandon Wilson, Alain Morais and Ramon Jackson, while representing the Knightmares were Warren Elliott, Jomo Pitterson, Equitable Brown and Dain Dixon.

Gladiators shot to third in the standings after pounding the Little Giants 4-0, while King Rippers registered an unconvincing 2.5-1.5 victory over the Reggae Knights, to claim their first match win in four starts.

Knightmares continue to lead League on 13.5 points, followed by the Blitzkrieg Boys on 11 points. In third place is Gladiators on 10.5 followed by Varcon CC in fourth on 9 points, Reggae Knights in fifth on 7, King Rippers in sixth on 5 and Little Giants in last place on 4.

The League continues this Saturday and Sunday at the Holy Childhood Library, with the playing of rounds 6 and 7. Round 6 encounters include the Rippers vs Varcon, Knightmares vs Reggae Knights and the feature match Blitzkrieg vs Gladiators.

In round 7 on Sunday, the Reggae Knights will face Blitzkrieg, Gladiators will challenge the Rippers and Varcon will be up against the Little Giants.

KNIGHTMARES TRAMPLE KING RIPPERS
TO TAKE LEAD IN LASCO CHESS LEAGUE

The Knightmares chess team handed King Rippers their third straight defeat on Sunday, to overtake the Blitzkrieg Boys atop the LASCO Chess League. Despite using two reserves, Knightmares were still too much for the hapless Rippers, defeating them 3.5 0.5. Winning for the Knightmares were Warren Elliott on Board 1 against Robert Wheeler, Equitable Brown against John Powell on Board 2 and Maurice Robinson against Annesha Smith on Board 4. Gary Hew salvaged a half point for the Rippers on Board 3 against Mikhail Solomon.

Reggae Knights resuscitated their championship hopes by registering a convincing 3.5 0.5 victory over the Little Giants and Gladiators were held to a 2 2 draw by Varcon CC.

Knightmares now sit atop the league on 11.5 points, followed by the Blitzkrieg Boys and Varcon CC on 9 points each. Despite having a match in hand, the Blitzkrieg Boys are yet to face the #2 ranked Knightmares and #3 ranked Gladiators.

The League continues this Saturday at the Holy Childhood Library, when Little Giants will battle Gladiators, King Rippers will duel Reggae Knights and in the top of the table clash, Blitzkrieg Boys will face Knightmares.

REPORT 1-INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT JCF

HISTORIC CHESS LEAGUE – PYROTECHNICS GALORE!

Jamaica’s chess is headed to another plateau as the eagerly anticipated inaugural Chess League, sponsored by corporate giants, LASCO, gets underway on Sunday, 26th March, 2006 at Holy Childhood High School with the opening ceremony at 11am. The first round is set to “pawn off” at 1 pm on the same day.

The tournament, the first of its kind in Jamaica, is scheduled to run for several months and will be played in Chess Olympiad format on weekends with each team playing on four boards with two reserves. The time control will be game in two hours. The average mean rating of each team must not exceed 2150 and no team can field more than two titled players (NM, WNM, FM, IM or GM).

Already, interest in the tournament is very high and a lot of “trash talk” has been making the rounds from a number of players who are already dusting off, and re-arranging, their furniture and shelves to make way for their trophies!

Of particular note is the fact that a number of Jamaica’s well-known players have indicated plans to form new clubs primarily to enter the tournament. The league is set to be a colourful one especially with the various “threatened” names (for example, the “Knightmares”!) to grace the event.

The detailed rules and registration forms for the tournament can be found at www.chessjamaica.org, the website for the Jamaica Chess Federation. Clubs/Teams from all over Jamaica are invited to be a part of history and register by the deadline (4th March, 2006).

Ian Wilkinson,
President,
Jamaica Chess Federation
8th February, 2006
