MIDDLESEX REGIONAL COMMITTEE SETS UP SHOP IN ST. MARY

The Middlesex Regional Committee of the Jamaica Chess Federation added St. Mary to its network, which already includes the parishes of Clarendon and St. Catherine. When the Committee visited St. Mary High on October 25, 2001, it was greeted by approximately 35 enthusiastic students and teachers from the schools Math and Chess Club, 25 of which have signed up to learn the game of chess.

Later in the week, the Committee was contacted by the Marymount High School, also in the Parish of St. Mary, who have also started a chess club, which now has around 25 members. Marymount is an all girls school.

The Committee will be seeking to provide as much support as it can to the development of chess in the Parish, through these two schools. Due to the natural disaster which has occurred in the Parish plans have been delayed but before long will be back on track. The main problem to be dealt with at this stage is the need for inexpensive chess sets.

Plans are being made to begin teaching the students and teachers of both schools on November 17, 2001 either at St. Mary or the Civic Centre in the Parish.

MIDDLESEX COMMITTEE TO VISIT ST. MARY

The Middlesex Regional Committee of the Jamaica Chess Federation will be seeking to add St. Mary to its network which already includes Clarendon and St. Catherine, when it visits St. Mary High in late October 2001. The Committee will be holding a mini workshop during the meeting of the schools newly formed Math and Chess Club on October 25, 2001.

St. Mary High once had a vibrant chess club which it is now attempting to revive under a new format which includes Mathematics.

The Committee will be looking at the possibility of doing some first hand assessment of the effect of the sport of chess on the performance of students in Mathematics.Other schools from the area will be invited to attend.

MIDDLESEX'S REP.FALTERS IN JAMAICA OPEN

Middlesex's Peter Myers found himself sole leader of the 2001 Jamaica Open at the half-way point with a perfect 3/3 and seemed set to walk away with at least one of the top prizes. However, Myers who was coming off a respectable third place finish in the 2001 National Chess Championship could not maintain the momentum in the final three rounds.

After drawing with National Master Geoffrey Byfield in round 4, Myers put on two disappointing performances (reminiscent of his old self), against National Master Russell Porter and National Junior Champion Equitable Brown, in his last two games, both of which he lost, and had to settle for minor placings down the field.

The tournament was eventually won by the many time champion of most of Jamaica's chess tournaments National Master Shane Matthews. Matthews was tied on 5 points with National Master Geoffrey Byfield but won on tie break. Tied for third were, National Master Mark Holness, National Master Russell Porter and Equitable Brown.

The top women's prize went to St. Andrew High's Camille Casserly. The Best Junior prize went to Equitable Brown and the top Cadet was surprisingly won by Brandon Wilson of Ardenne High, who is finally signalling his coming of age.
