LORNE ROMPS NEW YEARS CHESS

National
Master Malaku Lorne, a final year History major at the University of the
West Indies, marked his return to active play, by winning the 2006 New
Years Chess Open at the Shirley Retreat House over the weekend.
Lorne brushed aside Equitable Brown in the final round on Sunday, to end
with 5.5 points from 6 games to top the field of 75 competitors. He finished
a full point ahead of his nearest rivals Brown and National Master Russel
Porter, who both ended on 4.5 points to take joint second.
The Amateur Section was won by Melisha Smith of Queens High, who finished
with 5 points from 6 games. The next three competitors, Amari Graham,
Paul Brooks and Kadeem Knight also ended on 5 points, but Smith took the
first place trophy on tie-break.
Smith also took the best female prize, while Jared Lewis was awarded the
best Under 14 prize and Damani Reid received the prizes for best player
under 12 and under 10.

YEARS CHESS FOR SHIRLEY RETREAT
The 2006 New Years
Chess Open tournament will be held this weekend, January 14 and 15, at
the Shirley Retreat House, 7 Maeven Avenue, Kingston 10. The tournament
is open to all chess players in Jamaica and registration is scheduled
to take place between 8 am and 8:45 am on Saturday.
The tournament, which will be the first for the calendar year, will be
staged over 6 rounds, three on Saturday and three on Sunday. There will
be two sections; an open section in which anyone can play and a section
restricted to players with a Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) rating below
1800 or who have no JCF rating.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three players in each of the sections,
the best Under 10, 12 and 14 year-old players, the best rural player,
best female player, best junior and best new player.
The defending champion of the Open section is National Master Duane
Rowe, who will be seeking to win his third straight New Years Open
title, while the defending champion for the under 1800 section is Mikhail
Solomon.

the 2006 New Years Open, scheduled for this weekend, January 14 and 15

PRE-REGISTRATION
This will be possible up to Friday, 13th January, 2006
Players may pre-register with:
1. the Treasurer (NM ROBERT WHEELER) at 11 ½ Swallowfield Road,
Kingston 5 (999-2427),
2. the President (IAN WILKINSON) at 10 Swallowfield Road, Kingston 5 (960-4798),
3. Vice-President PETER MYERS (425-5939) and
4. Vice-President FM WARREN ELLIOTT (777-7634).
Please Note that Players who pre-register will get a discount of $200.00
on the entry fees indicated below. Pre-registration involves the payment
of the required fees and the completion of the JCF Entry Form.
REGISTRATION AND SCHEDULE
Saturday January 14 Day One
Starting at 8 am 8:45 am
Any player arriving after 8:45 am on day one, can still register but will
NOT be paired for the first round. Late entries will not be permitted
after round four.
DAY ONE (Saturday 14th January, 2006)
ROUND ONE: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
NB: Half (½) point bye available only for first round and will
only be allowed after proper registration.
PROPER REGISTRATION means paying the relevant fees in addition to completing
the registration form within the time stipulated.

Adult members - $800.00
Students/Juniors/Women - $600.00
NB: All players must be paid-up members of the Jamaica Chess Federation.
Membership fees Adults - $2,000 per year.
Juniors- $1,000 per year
