CAMPION ADVANCES IN RBTT CHESS CHAMPS

Campion College claimed the first semifinal berth in the RBTT National High Schools Chess Championship, with a convincing 3-1 victory over pre-tournament favourites Ardenne High on Saturday.

On Board 1, Ardenne’s Brandon Wilson exacted revenge on the previously undefeated Zhu Hui of Campion, who defeated him when the teams met in the preliminary round.

On Boards 2, 3 and 4, Campion’s Andrew Robinson, Charles Ross and Hadrian Christie, proved too much for Duncan Brown, Andrew Bent and Russell Meghoo respectively of Ardenne High.

If Campion goes all the way, they would be the first team in the 27 year history of the tournament to win with a female player on the top board.

The other quarterfinal matches will see Wolmer’s Boys and Meadowbrook High traveling to play Cornwall College and Mannings High respectively on Thursday, while Wolmer’s Girls will journey to take on Clarendon College on Friday

PRESS RELEASE BY PETER MYERS

RBTT CHESS QUARTERFINALISTS DECIDED

With the preliminary round of the RBTT National High Schools Chess Champs now complete, the original field of twenty-one high school teams is now down to eight
quarterfinalists.

From the Kingston Zone, Wolmers’ Boys and Girls qualified as the top two teams from that zone.

The St. Andrew Zone saw Campion College and two-time defending champions Meadowbrook High clinch two
automatic qualification spots.

The Middlesex Zone was won by last year’s runner-up team Clarendon College who took the lone automatic berth from that Zone, while Mannings High and Cornwall College
qualified from the Cornwall Zone.

The eighth wild card qualification berth went to Ardenne High who were unlucky not to have qualified automatically.

The quarterfinals which will take place over the next two weeks will see pairings as follows:

Cornwall College vs Wolmers’ Boys
Mannings High vs Meadowbrook
Clarendon College vs Wolmers’ Girls
Ardenne High vs Campion College

Teams named first play at home.
