DAVY WALKS
AWAY WITH PRESIDENTS CROWN

National

scoring an easy final round victory over National Master Equitable at

from ten games to claim his fourth hold on the National Champion title.
In second place was National Master Shane Matthews who finished on eight
points, while third place was shared between National Master Russel
Porter and last years winner FIDE Master Warren Elliott, who ended on

ROWE SET TO TAKE NATIONAL CHESS CROWN
LASCO CHESS CHAMPS

With only two rounds remaining, National Master Duane
Rowe has regained the lead in the 2006 National Chess Championships
and looks set to go all the way. Rowe chalked up wins over first time
championship entrants Ian Wilkinson and Mark Henry at the Norman Manley
Law School over the weekend, to increase his points tally to seven.
Hot on Rowes heels are National Masters Equitable Brown, Russel Porter
and Shane Matthews, each on six points. Also in with the slimmest of
mathematical chances is defending champion Warren Elliott, who is in
fifth position on five points. Elliott would however have to hope for
a series of unrealistic results if he is to regain the national crown.
Rowe, an engineer at the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), will
be pressing hard to take the title, as he will be going on study leave
at the end of September to pursue a second Masters Degree at the University
of Cambridge, where he will be pursuing an M.Phil. in Engineering for
Sustainable Development. He will therefore be out of action for at least
a year.
Rowes task over the board will not be easy however, as he will face
two of his closest rivals, Porter and Brown in the last two rounds scheduled
for this Saturday and Sunday at the Norman Manley Law School beginning
at 1 pm.
Complete points standings are Rowe, seven, Brown, Porter and Matthews,
six each, Elliott, five, Deborah Richards and Andrew Mellace, four,
Christopher Buchanan, three, Ian Wilkinson and Mark Holness, one and
a half each, and Mark Henry, one.

BROWN TAKES OVER AS LASCO CHESS CHAMPS HEAT UP

After
seven rounds of play, National Master Equitable Brown, who was recently
awarded the National Master title by the Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF),
sprung almost out of nowhere to take over the lead of the 2006 LASCO
National Chess Championships, currently taking place at the Norman Manley
Law School.
Brown, a twenty-four year old Mathematics and Information Technology
teacher at Camperdown High School, found himself at the top of the standings
after his more fancied opponents National Masters Duane Rowe and Shane
Matthews lost on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Matthews defeated
Rowe on Saturday, but then lost to JCF President Ian Wilkinson on Sunday.
Other matches on Saturday saw Russel Porter, Warren Elliott, Andrew
Mellace and Equitable Brown defeating Mark Holness, Wilkinson, Mark
Henry and Deborah Richards rewpectively. While on Sunday, Porter, Elliott,
Brown and Richards registered victories over Mellace, Henry, Holness
and Christopher Buchanan respectively.
These results blew the tournament wide open with Brown atop the standings
on five and half points from six games, followed closely by Rowe and
Porter on five, Matthews on four and a half and Elliott on four. They
are followed by Richards, the lone female in the championships on three,
Mellace and Buchanan on two, Wilkinson and Holness on one and a half
and Henry on one point.
The main event continues this weekend with the playing of rounds 8 and
9. The feature match of round 8 on Saturday will be Rowe vs Porter,
while on Sunday there are two feature matches in Brown vs Elliott and
Porter vs Matthews.
In the Presidents Invitational, which runs concurrently with the National
Champs, Camperdown High fifth former Damion Davy on eighteen points,
has a commanding five point lead. Davys nearest rivals Allan Wilson
of the Bank of Jamaica and Ramon Jackson of Jamaica Money Market Brokers
are both tied on thirteen points.
