WILSON REGAINS JUNIOR CHESS CROWN

Ardenne High sixth-former Brandon Wilson, reclaimed the National Junior Chess Champion title on Saturday, as the 2006 National Junior Chess Championships came to an end at the RBTT Bank Headquarters in New Kingston.

Wilson, who last won the title in 2004, but narrowly lost it last year to Christopher Buchanan, ended on 5 points from 6 games, the same as three other players, Tewana Mellace, Warren Cornwall and Damion Davy. However, Wilson was adjudged the winner using the median tiebreak system.

With this victory, Wilson has earned the right to represent Jamaica at all international junior tournaments, including the Sagicor Open Junior Chess Tournament to be held in Barbados in July, the Trinidad and Tobago Junior Open scheduled for July 31 August 03, and the 2006 World Junior U-20 Chess Championships to be held in Yerevan, Armenia, from October 02 17, 2006.

The female junior champion title was won by Melisha Smith of Queens high who scored 4 points to finish ahead of her sister Annesha Smith who ended on 3.5 and Peta-Gaye Reid on 3 points.

The under 1800 prize was won by Mellace, while Andrew Folkes took the award for top player rated under 1400.
