ZAMBIAN
MASTER TAKES JAMAICA CHESS OPEN

INTERNATIONAL CHESS MASTER Amon Simutowe of Zambia, once again made light
work of a field which included no less than eight of Jamaica's top chess
masters, to win the 2006 Jamaica Chess Open which took place at the Guardian
Life Head Office over the Heroes Day holiday weekend.
The
24 year-old Zambian star scored a perfect six points from as many games
to take top honours. Second place was shared between three Jamaican National
Masters, Russel Porter, Shane Matthews and Malaku Lorne, who all ended
on 4.5 points.
In
the Amateur section, Paul Brooks took home the first place trophy after
edging out Glenmuir’s Lucien Rowe on tiebreak after both players
ended on 5.5 points each. The top female in the amateur section was Annesha
Smith of Queens High.
After
the tournament, which had over eighty entrants, Simutowe gave a brief
lecture and then conducted a simultaneous exhibition. The exhibition saw
him playing thirty-one (31) players simultaneously, including four Jamaican
chess masters. He registered 28 wins and settled for three draws to FIDE
Master Warren Elliott, Maurice Robinson and Peter Myers.
The three-day event which was organised by the Jamaica Chess Federation,
was sponsored by Guardian Life, ISPO Construction of St. Ann and the Liguanea
Chess Club.
