SOLOMON TAKES NEW YEAR’S CHESS TITLE

 

Junior chess player Mikhail Solomon won his first major chess tournament, when he walked away with the 2007 New Year’s Open Chess title at the Campion College Auditorium over the weekend.

Solomon, who is currently a student at the University of the West Indies, finished unbeaten with 5 points from 6 games after securing a last round draw with National Master Russel Porter. Second place went to another UWI student Brandon Wilson, who finished on 4.5, while third was shared between Porter and Stuart James who both ended on 4 points.

The section for amateur players with a Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) rating under 1800, was won by veteran chess player Samuel Lamount who finished on a perfect 6 points from as many games. Second place went to Andre Soares who finished on 5 points while third was shared between Camperdown’s Rayon Walters and Campion College’s Kadeem Knight who both ended on 4 points
.

The tournament was co-sponsored by the JCF and Campion College.

The next chess event on the JCF calendar is the final qualifying event for the next phase of the 2006/2007 RBTT National Schools Chess Championship, which takes place this Saturday at the Montego Bay Community College.

NEW YEARS CHESS FOR CAMPION AUDITORIUM

1. DATES: Saturday 13th January, 2007 and Sunday 14thJanuary, 2007.

2. VENUE: Campion College (Auditorium)

3. FORMAT: Six-round Swiss.

4. SCHEDULE: Three Rounds each day.

5. TIME CONTROL: OPEN SECTION - Game in 65 minutes with an increment of 30 seconds from move one.

AMATEUR SECTION - Game in 65 minutes.

6. REGISTRATION: 8:00 am to 8:45 am at the venue on Saturday, 13th January, 2007. NB: PERSONS NOT REGISTERED DURING THE STIPULATED TIME CAN PLAY ONLY ROUND TWO ONWARDS.

DAY ONE (Saturday 13th January, 2007)

OPENING CEREMONY: 9:00 am to 9:15 am

ROUND ONE: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

NB: Half (½) point bye available only for first round and will only be allowed after proper registration.

“PROPER REGISTRATION” means paying the relevant fee(s) in addition to completing the registration form.

LUNCH 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm.

ROUND TWO: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

ROUND THREE: 4:15 pm to 7:15 pm

DAY TWO (Sunday 14th January, 2007)

ROUND FOUR: 8:30 am to 11:30 pm

LUNCH 11:30 am to 12:00 pm

ROUND FIVE: 12:15 pm to 3:15 pm

ROUND SIX: 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm

AWARDS CEREMONY: 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm


7. ENTRY FEES

Adult members - $600.00

Students/Juniors/Women - $400.00

NB: All players must be paid-up members of the Jamaica Chess Federation.

Membership fees – Adults - $2,000 per year.
Juniors- $1,000 per year.

8. GUARANTEED PRIZES

OPEN SECTION: 1st - $8,000.00 plus trophy.

AMATEUR SECTION: 1st - $4,000 plus trophy.
