LASCO/RBTT SCHOOLS CHESS
CAMPION CLAIM SIXTH SCHOOLS CHESS
TITLE
2005/2006 LASCO/RBTT National Schools Chess Championship
Campion
College clinched a record sixth National Schools Chess Championship title,
with a gritty 2.5 1.5 victory over Ardenne High in the finals held at
the RBTT Headquarters in New Kingston on Saturday.
As the match ensued, Campion landed the first and arguably the hardest
blow of the match, when their board 2 Phillip Pryce, held his more fancied
opponent Ardennes Brandon Wilson to a draw. This result left the rest
of the Ardenne team in a bit of a quandary, as a victory by Wilson was
critical if they were to win their first national title.
Despite the setback, Ardenne took the lead, when their board 3 Hakim Buchanan
turned back Brian Ewbank. This result left Campion with a must win situation
on boards 1 and 4 to be assured a sixth title.
On board 1, Campions Zachary Ramsay, who so far had less-than-convincing
performances in the knockout phase, came good when it mattered, when he
outlasted Andre Fraser to level the scores at 1.5 each.
It was then left to the board 4 encounter between Campions Charles Ross
and Ardennes Amari Graham to decide the championship. Ross had the advantage
for most of the match until both players ended up in a time scramble.
With each player having less than 10 seconds to finish the game, Ross
greater experience came into play, as Graham buckled under pressure and
watched his last few seconds run out and with it the Championship.
At the prize giving ceremony that followed, Ross was declared the MVP
and the best player on board 4 for the entire championship. Awards were
also presented to Lucien Rowe of Glenmuir B, and Brandon Wilson and Hakim
Buchanan of Ardenne for being the best boards 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
Glenmuir High won the award for being the best rural team.

GLENMUIR
B OUST GLENMUIR A FROM SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPS
Glenmuir B surprised Glenmuir A 3-1 at Glenmuir
High School on Saturday, to oust the defending champions from the 2005/2006
LASCO/RBTT National Schools Chess Championships.
On Board 1, Glenmuir Bs Lucien Rowe opened the scoring by defeating Glenmuir
As top player Onaje Lamont. Laurence Davy soon doubled Glenmuir Bs lead
when he put away David Morgan on Board 2. With their top two players down
and out, Glenmuir A were left with must win situations on the two remaining
boards in order to send the match into a tiebreak.
Walter Williams gave Glenmuir A a glimmer of hope on Board 3, when he
defeated Nickolai Lewis. The comeback hopes was short lived however, as
in the final game, Glenmuir A board four Michael Lewis could find no answer
for Glenmuir Bs Kurt Blake. Blake dispatched Lewis to secure an improbable
victory for the junior team, who some pundits thought would not have put
up a fight against their senior players.
In other quarterfinal matches played on Saturday at the RBTT Bank Headquarters
in New Kingston, Ardenne High put away Camperdown 3-1 and Campion College
defeated Calabar by a similar scoreline. The fourth quarterfinal match
between Wolmers Boys and Wolmers Girls ended in a 2-2 draw, but Stuart
James defeated Peta-Gaye Reid 4-0 in the lightning chess tie-break to
send Wolmers Boys into the semi-finals.
The semifinals which are scheduled to take place on Saturday at 11 am
at the RBTT Bank Headquarters in New Kingston, will see Ardenne High facing
Wolmers Boys and Glenmuir B challenging Campion College.

SEEDS STRUGGLE INTO QUARTER-FINALS

to score a respectable 3½ - ½ victory over Campion B (right)

Top
seed and defending champion Glenmuir A, third seed Wolmers Boys and fourth
seed Campion A, gave unconvincing displays in advancing to the quarterfinals
of the LASCO/RBTT Nationals Schools Chess Championship on Saturday.
Glenmuir A, who came into the Round of 16 unbeaten since 2004, found the
going rough against a well-prepared Campion B team. Glenmuir A however,
drew on all their experience to win by a respectable 3½ - ½
score line.
Wolmers Boys and Campion A were even less convincing over the board, as
they could only muster 2½ - 1½ wins against Mannings and
Heinz Simonitch respectively.
In other matches, Glenmuir B and Camperdown defeated Queens and St. Jago
by a similar 3-1 score and Wolmers Girls won by default against Cornwall
College who failed to show.
In the quarter-finals, which are scheduled to take place between February
06 and 11, Glenmuir A will face their protégés Glenmuir
B who are seeded eighth, second seed Ardenne will challenge seventh seed
Camperdown, Wolmers Boy will tackle sister school Wolmers Girls who are
unseeded and Campion A will match wits with long time nemesis Calabar,
who are unseeded.
