RBTT BANK BOOSTS SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPS

RBTT Bank Jamaica Limited on Tuesday, handed over a cheque in the sum of $224,000 to the Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF), as sponsorship for the 2005/2006 National Schools Chess Championship.

Mrs. Antoinette Reid-Walcott, RBTT Bank Regional Manager, who made the presentation, praised the JCF for its continued success in staging the Championship, which is now in its 31st year.

The Championship was first staged in 1975, when it was sponsored by Workers Savings and Loans Bank and contested by Wolmers Boys, Kingston College, Calabar High, St. Georges College, Meadowbrook High, Cornwall College and St. Jago High. The current championship is being contested by 39 teams from across the island.

Vice President of the JCF, Peter Myers, in accepting the sponsorship cheque, indicated that this years championship is the biggest chess tournament in Jamaicas history, not only in terms of sponsorship package, but also the number of contestants. With each team consisting of at least 4 members plus 2 reserves, there are at least 234 students involved.

Myers added that the sponsorship package would allow the JCF to institute certain prizes that were on the books for some time. The most innovative of these is the incentives that will be offered to members of the top two teams who maintain an average above 70% in their studies during the 2005/2006 academic year.

When questioned as to why such a high average, Myers indicated that most school chess players have averages above 70%, so it is really a matter of giving an additional rewarding to those players whose teams finish either first or second in the Championship.

The Championship continues on January 07, 2006, when all third place teams from the preliminary round, will battle each other for places in the next phase.
