NM LORNE WINS BAHAMAS OPEN

FOR THE JAMAICA CHESS FEDERATION

DATE AUGUST 21, 2006

LORNE WINS BAHAMAS CHESS TOURNAMENT

LORNE CONQUERS BAHAMAS

Jamaica’s talented National Master Malaku Lorne played some superlative chess to win the 2006 New Providence Invitational Chess Tournament held in Nassau, Bahamas between August 11 and 17.

After storming into the lead with maximum points from his first five games in the ten-player round-robin event, Lorne suffered a couple of hiccups when he lost to Bahamian national champion Frank Gibson and drew with three-time Barbadian junior champion Martyn Del Castilho.

Heading into the 8th and penultimate round Lorne was a half point behind Del Castilho but former Jamaican junior champion Candidate Master Daren Wisdom came to his fellow Jamaican’s aid by defeating the young Barbadian chess star in exciting fashion. Lorne’s destiny was, therefore, in his hands and the young rastaman finished with panache in the final round by defeating Bahamian Charles Duncombe with the Black pieces to take top honours.

The final points standings were Lorne – 7 ½ points, Del Castilho second on 7 points while Gibson and Wisdom tied for third place with 5 ½ points each. The tournament involved two Jamaicans, two Barbadians and six Bahamians including attorney-at-law Kean Smith, the president of the Bahamas Chess Federation.

Jamaican National Master Malaku Lorne won the New Providence Invitational Chess Tournament hosted by the Bahamas Chess Federation, which concluded at the Casuarinas Hotel last Thursday.

Lorne, who is currently a student at the University of the West Indies, Mona, finished atop the standings with seven and a half (7.5) points, closely followed by Martyn Del Castilho of Barbados on seven points (7) and another Jamaican Daren Wisdom and Bahamian Frank Gibson tied for third with five and a half (5.5) points each.

The Invitational event was the first tournament held in the Bahamas to be rated by FIDE, the World Governing for Chess. It also signalled the re-entry of Bahamas on the international chess stage, as they were one of only two countries in the region without internationally rated players, the other country is Belize. All the Bahamian players in the tournament were able to earn an international rating.

NM MALAKU LORNE LEADS IN BAHAMAS

After five rounds of the New Providence Invitational Chess Tournament being played in the Bahamas, Jamaica National Master Ras Malaku Lorne has stormed into the lead with a perfect 5/5 score. Closely on his heels is the three-time Barbadian national junior champion Martyn Del Castilho on 4.5/5 with his fellow countryman Justin Blackman in joint 3rd on 3/5, the same score as former Jamaica national junior champion Daren Wisdom and Bahamian Elton Joseph.

The line-up in the ten-player round-robin event is completed by five other Bahamian nationals including the Bahamian national champion Frank Gibson (in 6th position on 2.5/5) and Attorney-at-law Kean Smith, the president of the Bahamas Chess Federation.

As the competition heats up, the top board clashes in round six of the event, to be played at the Causarinas Hotel, will see Lorne up against Gibson and Del Castilho up against Joseph. Wisdom will do battle against Bahamian Byron Small.

The tournament is the result of a lot of hard work by the Bahamian Chess Federation, assisted by FIDE, to get the country back to playing competitive international chess, with a couple of the goals being for local players to have a chance of obtaining FIDE ratings and to position the country to participate in future Chess Olympiads.

Both Jamaican players left for the Bahamas on August 10 just in time for the first round which began on August 11. The tournament will end on August 17 and the Jamaicans will return home on August 18.

President
