EQUITABLE TAKES DB&G CLARENDON CHESS OPEN



National Master Equitable Brown scored 5.5 points from 6 games to win the 2006 Dehring Bunting &Golding Clarendon Chess Open, which was held at Glenmuir High School over the weekend.

Brown topped the Open section ahead of National Master Russel Porter who finished second with 5 points and Daren Wisdom who took third with four points. The award for best junior went to Walter Williams, while the top player from Clarendon was Juan Revilla.

The section for entrants with a rating under 1800 saw four players finishing atop the standings tied on 5 points each. When the tiebreak system was employed, David Morgan of Old Harbour High came out on top, ahead of Lawrence Davy of Glenmuir, Melisha Smith of Queen’s High and Peter Thomas of Camperdown.

Smith also took the best female award, while the best player under 12 years of age was Andrew Folkes and the best unrated player was Adrian Allen.

The tournament, which was organized by the Clarendon Chess Association (CCA) and sponsored by the May Pen Branch of DB&G, had a field of 56 entrants.

Players who are not Jamaica Chess Federation members and who do not reside or attend school in Clarendon, will be charged an additional J$200 for the rating of their games.
