Terrain
"The mist begins to ebb and flow in patches, as if it were a living thing writhing over the land. It squirms away from a thin scattering of trees: mostly pine, with pecan, tallow and oak here and there. There are no puddles, but the ground is damp as if recent rains had saturated the soil. Backlit cypress trees, draped with moss, line the edge of a river, knarled roots reaching like clawed fingers into water which shines silver in the early morning sun."
In the map above, the white star on the coastline is where the majority of the ships landed when the mist cleared. Some were beached, some landed in the water. Most have now been restored to their full glory (such as it is, for some). One ship (Xion's) is still wrecked, on a pile of dirt offshore, and has become known as Pirate Island. The white star to the north can now be ignored. The community has been built up either side of the small river that leads to the big lake. Beside the big lake, where New Orleans exists, can be found the big city of Arilune.
The Silver River Delta is based on the Mississippi River Delta and has a sub-tropical climate. It is currently undeveloped territory, supporting a community of over 2,000 refugees who have built themselves a new home here, from the ground up. This is very flat land, flat as a tabletop. There are no hills of any kind (so your character cannot stand on a hilltop, silhouetted against the night sky by strikes of lightning, or anything). The soil is rich with no rocks bigger than an inch or so, and there aren't many of those, so your character can't drop a boulder on someone either. There are swampy areas and wetlands (woods that are always squishy and wet and puddly). There can be no cellars for your character to lurk in, and no tunnels can be dug to escape from jail. Sorry.
The trees are pine, oak, tallow, willow, cypress (along and in the water), pecan, sweetgum and magnolia.
There's honeysuckle and morning glory. Blackberries grow wild, and the river is full of fish: bass, perch, croakers, catfish, gar. (See The Coast section for more on fish and fishing).
There's a ton of wildlife: alligators, racoons, oppossum, whitetail deer, rabbits, squirrels, bobcats, all sorts of ducks (mallard, wood ducks, canvas back, teal), and turtles who sun themselves on cypress stumps and logs.
Rich and lush pastures can be found for raising sheep and cattle, both of which are already raised by the community here. There are also pigs, chickens, ducks - the usual suspects.
Houses are mostly made of wood (pine or oak), but some are coquina. Limestone is readily available in Arilune, and clay is fired into bricks just outside Silver River town. These are the most common types of building stone. Some ornamental stone such as marble is available, but it's more rare and rather more expensive.
