Edmond
Edmond was born to a poor, working class family in Darkhaven. His mother was a housekeeper and his father was a ferrier for a lower noble who made his fortunes as a merchant. Edmond was the firstborn, but his brothers and sisters followed in quick succession. This put quite a strain on the Drayton family, despite all their best efforts to keep their heads above water.
Edmond demonstrated a keen ability to think for and take care of himself from an early age, so he went to help his parents as soon as his hands were big enough. His cheerful spirit and good manners endeared him to his parents' employers. Every night as they walked home, Edmond and his father would walk along the docks so he could see the ships. They had always fascinated the boy and filled his dreams.
When Edmond turned eleven, an apprenticeship opened up with the Cobham Shipwrights. Edmond's parents were feeling the strain of nine children and decided it was time to give their son a better opportunity at life. The nobleman who employed them happily sponsored Edmond for the apprenticeship. The young man quite suddenly found himself thrust into the very world he had watched from afar.
The Cobhams were a clan of Tinker Gnomes that had started out building precision instruments and gear for merchant ships. Through decades of hard work, they had established themselves as one of the finer shipbuilders in the Bay. Everyone worked, no one quit, and each was compensated as he was due. Edmond threw himself into this new life with a fervor that even surprised his masters. For such a young man to display such natural aptitude and enthusiasm was rare and the Cobhams were not about to let Edmond's skills go to waste.
Edmond spent the next several years working his way up through the company. He sent half of his earnings back to his parents and saved the rest, spending only what he needed for food, clothes, and the occasional diversion. Everyone in the clan agreed that he had a knack for solving problems and a natural ability to assess a situation. Edmond seemed to be able to intuitively come up with answers that the gnomes would later verify by their precise measurements.
By the time he came of age, Edmond was a line engineer in the drydocks and responsible for certifying that each new hull was up to spec. The Cobhams also had him working in the design shop during the evenings, learning the fine art of drafting and ship design. On the weekends, Edmond would go out with his sailor friends and have them teach him everything they cared to about the actual running of a ship. He believed that knowing how a ship was operated would make him a better shipwright.
Of course, fate is a fickle thing and not everything goes according to plan. The Chaos Storm came and changed everyone's fate. Edmond somehow found himself among those that escaped to Jacinth. The Cobhams said that they were too old to explore new worlds and that a young, enterprising man such as himself would be needed there. Edmond does not know what happened to his mentors. After passing through the Gate, Edmond settled into Dragongate Village and worked as an architect of sorts. He helped build the walls and advised people on how to keep their homes safe from the weather.
When the mists came, Edmond was wondering if he wouldn't have been better off trying his luck with his mentors and going out into the open sea. Upon arriving at the Silver River Delta, the now-23-year-old Edmond understood what they had been trying to tell him. This was a place where his passions could thrive. This was a place where he could make his own way. The waters of the Silver River were where he would make his destiny.
