OOC Rules
These rules were mostly devised and written by the very brilliant Alex_Volkov for the Dragongate Inn, and have been adopted by Silver River with kind permission.
CHARACTERS
Please see the Character Rules page for more information.
COMBAT
No combat should be entered into by anyone who has not submitted a character sheet of some sort to an op or by email to Bessie or Rach, and received notification that we have a bio-sheet on you. In other words, if you start a fight without clearing it with the person you are fighting, you are probably going to lose if one of the ops does not have a character sheet on you, regardless of how you freeform in other channels. No magic, no gifts, no alien technology, no special powers or abilities of any kind will work on anyone, including yourself, without registering with one of the Ops. Period. Until you talk to one of the Ops, you are simply a normal elf/human/wolf or whatever it is you walked into the room as. No super-strength, no above-natural agility, etc. You can SAY you are a vampire, you can role-play it and maybe never need to submit a character write-up at all. But if you want to fight, show off some power, or even heal, you MUST present some kind of write up to an Op and get clearance.
NPCs (non-player characters)
We prefer that you not bring in NPCs to assist you in your fighting, meaning we will not allow a player to bring in a horde or a army. If played well, you may bring in up to two NPCs but be advised, those NPCs are controlled by you, and therefore they are subject to the guidelines for normal characters. NPCs may not fight for you without Op permission - get someone else to play them or they are just there to hold your cape.
CHARACTER DEATHS
This is a hard decision for an Op to make. Deaths are not necessarily final in a fantasy game, but there are ways to make them final and those ways will be used on characters who we deem earn themselves a final death. While it is nice to have permission to kill someone's character before doing so, if you clear it with an Op because the other player doesn't want to get killed or won't acknowledge a hit, characters can be deemed hit or damaged or charmed or killed by another character if it seems necessary. We don't do it randomly on a whim, but if you don't like the possibility that an Op might rule against you sometime, don't play here.
POSTING
In the IC areas, you will remain IC or type in (()) to indicate you are speaking out of character. Using () around any other statement will be treated as OOC. You are also welcome to make OOC comments in purple. We consider that to be the colour that denotes the voice of the storyteller (that's you) so you can either use it to give us story details (stage directions) or you can use it to speak to us directly. Unlike some channels, we do not ban all OOC conversation, but please do not overuse it. Similarly - do not use excessive cursing or capital letters. Do not use any bright colors, or light gray.
PARAGRAPH POSTING
You shouldn't need more than two paragraphs per post at any time, and that includes an entering description of your character. Edit it to two paragraphs, no more, and include only what would catch the eye of someone who casually looks over at your character. Post longer descriptions on the forum. (Ops may post more than two paragraphs for the purposes of storytelling.)
AUTOHITS
Don't post for someone else. Posting "I take a swing at Fester's head!" or "I trip Fester to make him fall down and ruin his cake" is probably alright. Posting "I take a swing at Fester's head and obliterate it in one punch" or "I trip Fester and he falls down and ruins his cake" is not acceptable. Type Intent, not Action. Actions will be resolved by mutual agreement or an Op on duty. If you don't want the Op to interfere, you better not make it their business.
Don't start calling "autohitautohit!" when someone posts as above. Just say "Bill moves out of the way with agile grace" or "Bill falls clumsily out of the way, evading what looked like a sure hit". If you don't want to get hit, then don't. But don't be a not-very-nice person about it, either.
PSIONICS (Mind-reading skills)
Thinking in channel IC (/me wonders what is for lunch) means your character is thinking in a way that can be picked up by any telepath or sensitive within the scope of his powers. People who 'think' so others can read it are also typing so sensitives can hear it. If your character has an opinion or thought that you really don't want any other character to pick up on, don't post it in the channel. If your character has psionic shielding, don't post anything other than surface thoughts in the channel. If you don't like this rule, don't play here.
IC vs. OOC
Bear in mind that just because we hate your character does not mean we don't like you. If we kick your booger-flinging goblin from channel 23,432 times, that does not mean we hate you, it just means we despise booger-flinging goblins. Similarly, if your elf and an op's dwarf get into a big argument, don't assume that when you or the op bring in another character, the argument will still apply to the new character. Keep your characters separate, and separate OOC and IC issues.
BANNABLE OFFENSES
- Explicit sexual activity, especially if told to take it private.
- Attacking people without clearing it with the player OOC and/or for no clearly understood IC reason.
- Spamming. Advertising for other channels, scrolling, refusing to stop chatting OOC after a warning in channel, etc. Please note that this rule also includes posting songs/poetry one line at a time, even if it's ICly. If your character sings a song and it's imperative that you type out the entire lyric word for word, at least type it in paragraph form.
- Bossiness by a non-op/storyteller. Ops and storytellers are supposed to be bossy. It's their job. You want to make the rules -- get your own channel.
- Offensive or inappropriate names. Don't bother coming in with a name like Master_Baiter or Biggus_thingyus. Or worse.
- Refusing to comply with the channel rules.
- Ignoring an ongoing event/scene/action that should have some affect on your character. Particularly after you've been told to stop ignoring it.
- Back-talking an Op who's doing his/her job. Discussion of sensitive matters can if necessary be in Private Message. Backtalk should be done right to someone in the room so they can slap you for us.
- Banned topics of conversation in the OOC channel include politics and religion of any kind. It's too easy to get into an argument or offend someone. Change the subject and move on.
- Obnoxious characters. If you make your characters universally unlikable and unplayable in our world -- we're going to encourage you to play somewhere far, far away. Like on another Net.
- Obnoxious muns. We might ban you because we just don't like you. Don't go away mad. Just go away. Yes. This really is a rule. If you are obnoxious, arrogant, weird, generally unfriendly or make yourself disliked, we can just kick you out. Mind your manners.
OPS
Ops who wear the Symbol of Power (the @) are always, always, more powerful than the most powerful non-member in the room, regardless of your status in other realities. If that is a problem, leave the Silver River Delta. Ops are always more powerful in this channel; all of their items work, all of their magic is powered, all of their abilities are at full strength, unless they are denied those powers by an On-Duty Storyteller, who can revoke ANYONE'S powers for any reason. If any Op or moderator speaks to you OOC, you had best listen. We will kick your butt a few times if we think you're not listening. There is no big deal about being kicked. We will do it to get your attention, to annoy you into compliance if you're being a jerk, or for a warning that you're about to step into bannable territory. If you were kicked and don't know why, ask. If you are emotionally damaged by this, don't come here, there are plenty of kinder, gentler channels.
TELL A STORY
If you have a particular story you'd like to run in the channel, you must clear stories with the Ops before running them, preferably 24 hours before.
