The Commanders' House
It's big, it's white, and it bears the crest of the Black Army, as well as Mornae and Erysol's personal crests. Built entirely of brick, then plastered and whitewashed, roofed with tile that glows with a pink tinge as the sun sets, this building sits on the river side of the Gathering. A turret stands either side of the heavy, double, oak front doors. Behind the House, leading to the river, there is a large garden full of trees to offer some privacy. A private dock on the river allows for the reception of visiting dignitaries.
Entering through the oak doors, one finds oneself in an ante-chamber, where guards will ask you to state your business. Theyll direct you into the north wing if you've come to see someone about...
- acquiring property
- starting up a business
- trade with Arilune (or elsewhere)
- getting some financial advice
- paying your tithe
- complaining about the bloody tithe
- adopting an orphan (or two)
- finding an apprentice from the orphanage
- learning a new skill or trade
- lodging a complaint
- seeking legal advice
- volunteering with the Sheriffs, or other voluntary organisations
- sanitation
- joining the Black Army
- etc...
Round the back if you're delivering something, please. If you've still not found all of your belongings after the Mist dumped you and your things here, you can enquire at the Lost & Found office, located to your right as you come into the building.
Pass through the ante-chamber into the main house, and you'll find yourself in the Great Hall. To your right, three archways for the three rooms along that wall. To your left, a solid wall with displays of tapestries, crests, banners and some weapons. At the far end of the Hall is a large staircase that spirals lazily and widely up to the second floor of this two-storey house. The handrail is a snake, the head open-mouthed at the bottom of the stairs.
In the circle underneath and behind the staircase is a semi-circular sofa around a central firepit. Obscuring this from view is a small raised dias upon which sit two large oak chairs (in the middle), one smaller oak chair, and three little oak chairs. Between the two large chairs sits a black dragon statue made of stone, holding a large clear diamond in its open maw. If it were real, it would be about five feet long from nose to tail.
The Great Hall is occasionally used for council gatherings that are open to the public, and also for regular public forums so people can air their grievances and their requests to the Lord and Lady. It's two-storeys high, but there is a bridge across it at the second-floor level.
The three rooms off the Great Hall, beginning near the front door, are as follows: there is a small chapel, currently dedicated to Lyfia, goddess of Mercy. It is open to the public by special request only. (For the occasional handfasting or blessing. Mornae requests a generous donation be made to the Hospice.) Next to that, a library with Archive and Maproom, not open to the public. However, they can make an appointment to come in and consult with the librarian or view certain maps. Beside that, a reception room and small private dining room used by Mornae and Erysol to entertain important people. If it's a large party, they'll use the Great Hall.
