Education
There is free, non-compulsory schooling for children of all ages, paid for by the tithe system of taxation. Subjects that are taught include:
- Animal care (taught by Daniel)
- Arithmatic
- Basic first aid (taught by Miranda)
- Carpentry (taught by Polear Maelstrom)
- Cookery (taught by Bessie Maelstrom)
- Craft** (taught by a variety of people, including Mary Blinn)
- Herblore
- Horse-riding (also Daniel)
- Reading (Mornae occasionally teaches this class)
- Swordplay* (taught by Aesa)

* This class is not free, although arrangements can be made for financial assistance. Parents wishing their child to study swordplay must apply for them to do so at The House. The cost includes a good-quality single-hander sword and accompanying paraphenalia, including basic leather protective clothing. A good grade at the first stage of basic first aid is a requirement. Advanced students can study fencing. This carries an additional cost for equipment.
** Includes basic needlework, weaving, basketmaking, knotwork, etc. It is also compulsory for boys.
Further education is available, and many students begin a trade apprenticeship whilst still very young. They may choose to continue their regular schooling, or some of it, during this time. There are evening and weekend classes for adults wishing to further their education.
