Character Rules
Most races are allowed, subject to believability, but please note that the following characters are discouraged unless you persuade us that you can play them in a way that facilitates ongoing and productive collaboration.
- Angels and demons.
- Vampires. They are burned by sunlight on this world, even in shadows, so being about in daylight hours is inadvisable. They tend not to be too popular with the majority of the local population, too.
- Symbiots or other parasite-like creatures that give your character powers, or any spelling variation on those themes.
- Godmoders. Any character who can destroy an entire street of buildings, or anything bigger than that, by itself.
- Chaotic Evil characters. We've experienced many of these whose only goal was to come into channel and cause as much trouble as possible. This is called 'Grief Playing' and we do not welcome it.
- 'Humorous' Characters. Please, spare us characters with handicaps created just to be funny. No gully dwarves, mentally retarded people, giant babies, spastics, handicaps or disabilities played for 'laughs'. Just because you think it's hysterical, does not mean anyone else does. This section includes other 'humorous' characters such as unattended children, animals, disembodied clouds, mysterious puddles, and all 'gimmick' characters. (However, the ops may play any of these for storytelling purposes.)
INTERACTABILITY
Yes, we know it's not a word, but it's something to note when you're bringing a character into this roleplay setting. We are not a Public Roleplay Service. Other channels with other Ops may well exist to provide a roleplay service. Some people Op in a manner akin to a Dungeon Master in a tabletop game. We don't, as a rule, although we do more so when we're running a specific plot.
Day to day, our characters are exactly like anyone you might bump into in a bar: they won't instigate interaction with your character unless prompted to do so by your character. That prompting does not have to be an attack. Try asking for a cigarette, offering a drink, commenting on the weather. Whatever you might do to strike up a conversation in everyday life, rather than something drastic.
If your character is just wandering around ignoring everyone, everyone will tend to ignore them in return. If your character seems to be in a little world of their own, none of ours are going to butt in because they have their own little worlds to think about.
If you ask the ops or the other regular players, we can help you slot your character into the everyday goings-on, thus upping the opportunities for interaction with other characters. Ask us what trades are needed, what services might be useful, what kinds of people or actions would stimulate interaction.
It doesn't have to be positive, but it has to be active. That's what prompts people in the real world to interact with one another, and it's the same thing here.
