September 10, 2002 -   On Sunday, I realized that I was facing a very serious problem. The Texans season was starting up for real and I realized that I still did not know who my favorite football team was. Growing up in Omaha, I was a HUGE Oilers fan. You think I like the Astros now, you should have seen me during the Warren Moon years. I was obsessed, I decorated my room in their colors, I celebrated like mad when they won and cried like a baby when they lost. When they moved to Tennessee and became the Titans, my love for the team faded some, but I still was a big fan. I wasn't a Houstonian so I didn't get bitter about the situation like many natives did. I still rooted for Bruce Mathews, Blaine Bishop, Marcus Robertson and the guys. When I found out that Houston was getting a new team, I figured that I would probably root for it. When they named the team the Texans, I wasn't so sure. So this dilemma has stayed with me up until last weekend. I decided the best way to choose a team was to watch them both play that day (both games were televised) and see what my heart told me. The Titans made a fabulous 2nd half comeback against the Eagles and I was ecstatic. I was sure after watching that game, I'd remain a Titans fan. But then came the Texans game....unbelievable, stirring, hell, practically moving. The weekend only ended up leaving me more confused. As I see it, I have four options here:

1) Root for Both Teams - If you have made it to this far in this column, and you are a sports fan, you understand that this is not really a possibility. Having two favorite teams is equivalent to having two wives...nice in a perfect world, but just not possible. To make matters worse, the Texans and the Titans are in the same division. That means I cannot even be passive about one of the teams...I have to actively root against it!

2) Root for the Texans - When the team was named the Texans, I thought that I could never like them. But over time, they have started to grow on me. The logo and the unis are great, the stadium is a palace, and it is hard to root against the hometown team. Plus, they seem to be building the right way. I wanted David Carr as the number one pick from the time I saw him play against Oregon State early last season. It would be easy to adopt him as my favorite player and move on. Plus, that opening game was unreal...I can only imagine being in the stadium and being a part of that.

3) Root for the Titans - I thought that it would be easy to move on from rooting for the Titans once some of the old stand-bys like Matthews, Robertson, and Bishop moved on. Unfortunately, its not so. I now feel a connection with current players such as McNair, Rolle, Mason, George, Kearse, etc., a development that I did not forsee. I can't imagine rooting against those guys...plus, I have a strong hunch that they have a legitimate shot at the championship this year. I feel like I have been with this team through numerous ups and downs, and almost feel compelled to see it through.

4) Stop watching the NFL and concentrate on my schoolwork - Please.

So I'm still left without a decision...what do I do here? I need help...if any of you can come up with a compelling reason for one or any other acceptable solution, I will give you free Astros tix (or Texans if I can get them). Please Help!!
Sign of the Apocalypse---I decided to stay home and read case law tonight instead of going to ther game and watching Wade pitch.
