July 25, 2002 -   The one column I don't skip, Thursday Thoughts...

Earlier this year, my dad took the family to Disneyland...I wasn't invited. My dad is now with my stepmom in Ireland...again, I wasn't invited. That is why I feel no guilt about playing rich boy this week... I'm driving my stepmom's Navigator, relaxing by the pool, running up the family tab at the country club. I'm living the good life.

Every time a girl eats a banana, every guy's head is on a swivel. I do it too, but this is a phenomenom that begs for closer examination. When the girl puts the banana in her mouth...I get the appeal of that. But what happens next...she bites down! And we find this sexy?

I have my own little column stalker now. She emails and calls me daily, heckling me when I don't have a column up in a timely manner. She tries to get me to write a column about her. I must admit, it is a little creepy.

Jeff is Gay Club MVP of the week. He brought kolaches to our morning basketball outing today.

Astros had another waste day today...they tend to win games by 6 to 10 runs, they lose games by 1 and 2 runs. It would be nice if they saved a few of those extra runs for the close games.

The Todd Snider concert I went to last Thursday was certainly an experience...never have I been so aware that I was in Texas. What was my first clue...could it have been the middle-aged guy hanging out the window yelling at the girl I was with? Or maybe that both the opening act and headliner were drinking on stage? Or maybe it was the uniformed cop who was shopping for marijuana pipes? Or the guy in matching tie-dye t-shirt and shorts? Or possibly the best dressed couple of the night--Him: Bandana, black Harley t-shirt, tight jeans, oversized tassled boots worn over the jeans; Her: Matching bandana, poor fitting jeans, boots, black tank top with the phrase "Taste Me" in big pink letters.

Is it just me or is everything just a little bit more fun if you are breaking the rules while you are doing. There is just something about the added rush you get when you are doing something that you shouldn't do.

I saw
West Side Story at the Miller Outdoor Theatre the other night...I knew the story before, but this performance reminded me of the major problem I have with it. The recycled Romeo and Juliet plot is fine, the music is fine, but I find it hard to accept that the Jets and Sharks are dangerous criminals when they are running and dancing on stage in brightly colored pastel outfits. The person who did the wardrobe for the Sharks must have found a clearance sale at United Colors of Bennetton.

Chien brought home photographs to the apartment tonight of this 14-year-old Mandi Moore-esque model whom he is giving private lessons to in volleyball. This definitely has after-school special written all over it.

Representative Jim Traficant (D, Ohio) got booted out of Congress yesterday for bribery and tax evasion improprieties by a 420-1 vote. That in itself isn't very funny. The one person who voted to keep Traficant : Gary Condit. Now that, that is funny.

I just finished a book called
Among the Thugs. It is a journalistic account of hooliganism and violence among English soccer fans in the 1980s. It was quite possibly the most disturbing thing that I ahve ever read. It wouldn't have affected as much if it was fiction...the fact that it was all true made my stomach turn.

My biggest problem in life is that I find myself amusing...I can't tell you how often that gets me in trouble.

Anyone seen the bassist for the band Ash? She is an absolute knockout.

Bob Schneider plays at the Satellite on Friday, The Vines are playing the Engine Room on Saturday...I'm going to neither. I'm bummed, but any of you who want a different night out should try one of the concerts...The Vines especially should be pretty intese.

I'm housesitting and watching my sister Meaghan and brother Jimmy all weekend. Would it be wrong if I use my little siblings for column fodder?
Within one game of .500...finally
