| June 21, 2002 - I can't even describe how much I want to write another World Cup column today, but to the delight of my already dwindling readership, I will restrain myself. On to the column Yesterday, I was feeling both bored and full of myself, so I decided to look back over some of my old columns. After reading a few, the boredom remained but the ego was quickly deflated.... misspellings, poor grammar, bad predictions, and more than a few embarassing thoughts. I found the thing that shocked me the most upon rereading my June 4 column about the perfect girl for me. Somehow, I managed to leave out the number one qualification...I must have planned to finish with a bang but forgot the bang when I got to the finish. To make up for this gross oversight, I have decided to devote this entire column to attempting to describe this mythical characteristic. The Number One characteristic for the perfect girl, for me or anyone, is simply the "It" factor. What is the It factor? Poets, authors, and songwriters, all more talented than I, have been trying to put it into words since the dawn of the written word. None have truly succeeded. That won't stop me from trying. The It factor is that something extra that a girl has that can make an average girl alluring, an attractive girl irresistable. They have that something extra, that something that you cannot quite pin down, that makes a girl infinitely more attactive. The characteristics that go into making IT up vary from guy to guy...it can be a quick wit, a soft heart, a gleam in the eye or any combination of factors that always leave a guy completely blind to all of her faults. I strongly believe that if you can fully describe why you find someone attractive, then she doesn't have IT. Some girls have the It factor over all guys, some have it only over one. Girls who have IT over you leave you weak in the knees. They cause you to crave being in their presence. They leave you with a goofy smile on your face whenever you cross their paths. If a girl has IT over you, she can bend your will to whatever she desires it to be. You see IT factor influenced couples all of the time...girlfriends of your friends who can do know wrong in the guy's eyes, even though we all know she is an obnoxious, insolate maneater. Don't get these IT factor influenced guys confused with your friends who are simply whupped....although the cases can often overlap, there are easy tesst to distinguish between the two. First, if it is a guys first real girlfriend or first time getting sex, he is most likely just whupped. Second, if every girl he dates has this same effect on him, he is likley just predisposed to be whupped. On the otherhand, if your previously playboy buddy is suddenly ga-ga over a girl, the IT factor may be involved. To further the illustration along, let me give you an example of a celebrity who has the IT factor. I would argue to my dying day that Jennifer Garner from Alias is not particulary pretty. Obviously she isn't bad looking, and she has a nice body, but as starlets go she isn't particularly attractive. For some unexplainable reason, whenever she is on screen I find her incredibly attractive. If I just look at a picture, though, she looks fairly plain to me by celebrity standards. The IT factor is why you see a lot of guys lusting over girl next door types of celebrities instead of strictly supermodels. I think every guy can name that girl who has IT over him (btw, it can only be one at a time...you can recognize the IT factor in others, but only one girl at a time can have the full power over you). I've probably thought over 50 girls had the IT factor in my time, maybe 10 or so had it directly over me.I have dated two...the others I was either too shy around, were taken, or wouldn't have me. In some I recognized it immediately, some seem to grow into it as you get to know them, in others I noticed it almost out of nowhere. To these girls, the world is theirs. |

| I know that it is probably bad form to criticize Brad Friedel after he stood on his head to get the United States this far, but did anyone else think that Germany's goal was a little soft? I think the US played their best soccer of the tournament today... unfortunately, all of the breaks finally went against them. I'm sure Mexico liked the poetic justice of the hand ball that wasn't called in the second half. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
